We are generally well served by the staff of the NHS. However once in a while one comes into contact with someone who practices on a whole different level. Such an individual is Mr Shariff who heads the plastic surgery trauma service in Bradford. I suffered a severe dog bite to my hand in April 2023. It was described by the A and E unit in Calderdale where I live as a partial amputation of the ring finger of my right hand. I was referred to Bradford and from the moment I came into contact with Mr Shariff I received the most exceptional expertise and care. Mr Shariff has a wonderful ability to immediately give calming confidence that help is at hand. He is skilled beyond expectations but more than this he is human. His manner is charming and his sense of humour and his communication skills are immense. When photographs of my initial injury are compared to how my damaged finger now looks, it is almost impossible to believe it is the same finger, such is the skill which was needed to carry out the repair. Almost 18 months after the bite Mr Shariff performed further surgery to attempt to relieve the pain I was still experiencing from permanently damaged nerves which I assumed was something I would have to endure indefinitely. This surgery has been very successful and although it is impossible to ever be “back to normal “ again I am very grateful to Mr Shariff for the improvement his skills have achieved. His continued monitoring of the status of my fingers is most re assuring. Please let’s have more people in this world like Mr Zakir Shariff and it would be a much better place.

I met Mr Shariff following a sports injury sustained early in 2023 which developed into a large Morel Lavellee lesion on my right buttock/leg. His knowledge and understanding of what turned out to be quite an unusual injury helped me to get back to normal following his excellent treatment. His sense of humour and kindness shone through at each meeting whilst combined with his excellent team in support gave me confidence that all would eventually be well. I could not have asked for more.

I would like to thank Mr Shariff and his team for the excellent for the excellent care I received from May 2021 to July 2023 in fixing my left hand following trauma injury whilst out running. What Mr Shariff has achieved through two operations (Orif proximal little finger and K-wire proximal phalanx ring finger in May 2021 followed by adhesion tendon repair in May 2023) in giving me back mobility and full strength in my hand has been nothing short of a miracle! It was clear from the first time I meet Mr Shariff that he is a kind and polite man who takes great care and precision in his work and for his patient’s aftercare every step of the way. Mr Shariff took the time to share and clearly explain the anatomy of the hand, the extend of my injury, the repairs he had done in helping me understand so I was able to work with him and his lovely team for the best possible outcome whilst realistically managing my expectations over the time it would take. Two years ago I thought I would never be able to make a fist and grab a dumbbell again (I’m a keep fit fanatic!) but now I can thanks to this wonderful man and his amazing aftercare team!

I met Mr Shariff in his clinic on 3 separate occasions during 2022. I was impressed by him on every visit for his professionalism, knowledge and expertise, his grasp of the issues and understanding of my needs. Mr Shariff carried out a small procedure on my forearm which has healed perfectly and left almost no scar. He also arranged for an x-ray of my finger, diagnosed the problem and put forward three probable solutions of differing levels of severity/intervention. He demonstrated huge respect for my time, and consideration of that of the hospital, in organising, very efficiently, as much help as possible on each visit. I also enjoyed seeing Mr Shariff because he was polite, clear in his communication with me, was considerate and empathetic, and very good-humoured. These are qualities and characteristics that only the best of doctors seem able to demonstrate and many more should aspire to. Thank you.

I had dupuytrens contracture (my little finger was curled). I was very impressed by the care and information I received from the whole team from start to finish. Mr Zakir Shariff knew exactly how this interfered with daily tasks. He explained everything clearly, he was helpful and reassuring . He was very informative about the operation and how it would be carried out and affect me after the operation. The results were excellent. I am so pleased. Mr Shariff has a lovely manner. He is very caring and trustworthy. Thank you.
