I saw Mr Patel by private appointment for a Bicep Rupture recently. Mr Patel, spent a few minutes diagnosing me. He then advised me of next options. If i was to describe his demeanour, i would say disspassionate, uninterested. He certainly didn't inspire me with confidence. I have never had surgery before and asked him some simple questions initally, as the conversation continued (nuder 5 minutes!) he kept directing me to do reading on his website as he hurried me out the room, not what i was expecting. The following week i was rung up by his assistant, who was both rude and happy to put me under a lot of pressure to do surgery. When he 'found out' i was getting a second opinion from another Consultant (as advised), he got upset and refused to conduct my surgery. I wouldn't recommend this Consultant to others.

Response from Mr Vipul Patel

I am sorry you feel this way. This review, however, is an inaccurate reflection of the facts. It is unfortunate that you chose to interpret our efforts to arrange timely treatment for you as “pressurising” you to have surgery. I saw you on a Friday (a few days after your injury), carried out a thorough consultation, diagnosed your condition, advised you of the treatment options including the option of surgery. I advised you of the benefits of surgery and described the risks in detail, including the implications if one of the more serious risks materialised. I advised you of the recovery and rehabilitation that follows surgery. I answered questions from yourself and your mother who was accompanying you. The consultation took at least 20 min. When surgery is discussed as an option, there is a lot of information to take on, and as a supplement to the consultation, I advised you to read the information on our website at your convenience over the weekend to aid your decision-making. I suggested that you then let my secretary know on Monday whether you wished to have surgery. I also personally escorted you around to the Radiology department to arrange an urgent MRI scan for you. Most young patients will benefit from and choose to have surgical repair for distal biceps ruptures. Surgery is best carried out early as delay in surgery makes it more challenging. Furthermore, organising surgery involves a minimum lead-time of 3 days to arrange preassessment and Covid-19 testing. There was a slot available for surgery the following Friday. Having not heard from you by Tuesday, my secretary called you to enquire whether you had come to a decision. You informed her that you wanted some more time to consider this. My secretary informed me that you felt pressurised to make a decision. I asked her to call you back to emphasise that you should not feel pressurised to make a decision and to take your time. You telephoned her shortly afterwards to indicate that you wished to proceed with surgery. My secretary proceeded to book your surgery with the hospital. Whilst she was liaising with the hospital to arrange your preassessment, she was informed that a second booking had been received (from another Consultant) for your surgery. Given this information, we cancelled the booking that we had reserved with the hospital. You have not contacted my office since (nor did you inform us that you had sought treatment with another consultant). I hope your surgery went well and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I was operated on by Mr. Patel in Oct 2019 for a total Shoulder joint replacement. Mr. Patel and his team gave excellent care and I have been very pleased with the outcome with full movement and virtually no pain - recovery was tough and lengthy but that was to be expected. Mr. Patel was kind and professional throughout and took time to explain the process and what to expect from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend him to anyone with arm and shoulder problems.

I was referred to Mr Patel in February 2021 following a diagnosis of avascular necrosis in my right shoulder as a result of a previous trauma. I was admitted to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Epsom Hospital in July 2021 for a complete shoulder replacement. The surgery has been completely successful and I am now well on the way to complete recovery. The whole process from diagnosis to surgery and beyond has been exemplary. I felt very secure and confident and would highly recommend the care received throughout.

I went to see Mr Patel for treatment for my frozen shoulder. Following steroid injections and physio it was determined that the best course of action was surgery. This was successful along with the follow up physio. After 8 weeks of physio post operation I have 95% of movement back which is better than expected and I expect this will continue to improve. Throughout my treatment plan Mr Patel took the time to explain the options, and provide insight into my progress. Additionally I was able to book surgery within 2 weeks of making the decision and I found the whole set up and process seamless.

Following a nasty RTA in 2016 I was referred to Mr Patel via NHS in 2016. He diagnosed the severe problem I was having with my right shoulder and arranged for my surgery. I progressed well and my right shoulder is repaired and functionals well now. 2 years ago my left shoulder became extremely painful and mobility started to be compromised and the pain intense and continuous. I remembered my exercises from the previous time but to no avail, I was becoming worse by the day. This time I was able to access physiotherapy via BUPA and was able to chose Mr Patel to be my physician once more. He assessed my mobility and pain and it was apparently a slower reaction to that original RTA. Mr Patel listened to my concerns and gave me options of treatment. I had 2 separate steroid injections in-line with the protocol which initially eased the pain but it returned and the pain was so intense that I was unable to sleep at night, it also compromised my life with the lack of movement and mobility. Surgery became the next option and I was given full information and was able to make an informative decision. I underwent a Left Shoulder Arthroscopy, excision of calcium deposit and acromioplasty. All care and attention was given to me. Following surgery the recovery was as Mr Patel had stated it would be. I am recovering well. I’m back to swimming, my passion and daily life is now pain free. I can sleep at night, hooray. I remain following my physiotherapists instructions and in a few months time my shoulder should be as good as the right one. Mr Patel listened to my concerns, he took my pain and lack of mobility seriously. He gave me constructive and professional advice at all consultations. Thank you
