After my first consultation with Mr Arzoglou I felt at ease with the diagnosis he gave me and fully understood the procedure I had to go through. His explanation of my operation, T9/T10 disc excision via thoracotomy, was detailed and all risks were highlighted, post operation details were discussed also (i.e. the level of pain I would be going through due to the procedure and the care I would be given.). I received a call from his secretary during the beginning of lockdown to say there were dates available and would I be free, the answer was definitely, although I did have concerns about Covid 19. I also received a call from Mr Arzoglou himself to reassure me of all the measures in place to protect me and all other patients and staff against Covid 19, this I think gave me the confidence to proceed knowing I was in safe hands. My whole experience from being dropped off in the car park by my husband (due to Covid 19 you had to be on your own) being received on the ward and shown to my isolation room, having my Covid 19 test and awaiting my results (within 3 hours! - negative), prepared for markings the next day and the following day for my operation I was made completely comfortable and at ease. Mr Arzoglou met me and again explained the whole procedure to make sure I knew exactly what was going to happen. I was anxious, naturally, however the nurses and theatre were absolutely fabulous constantly making sure I was ok. After the procedure I had to go onto a high dependency ward (40 I think) again the staff were brilliant, Sister Jane is a legend! After three nights there I was able to go onto ward 4, I felt unsure about moving but had nothing to be concerned about, again the staff were the best. Under the circumstances they were working they were consistent, helpful and caring, I cannot praise them enough. I did develop some complications with my lung (I had this explained to me before my operation so it was no surprise it had happened) which extended my stay to 13 nights however during this time I was kept informed at every stage of my recovery exactly what was happening and of the progress I was making. Mr Arzoglou called into the ward one evening, he was not on duty, to check on me and my progress, I was so grateful of this and it was over and above what I had expected to happen. He is a very caring man. The physiotherapists visited me from day two post operation and encouraged me so much to be back on my feet. It's amazing the job they do and the support they give you, it spurred me on to be able to be moving on my own, unaided. Finally the day came for discharging me. It took a while for everything to be arranged however once again the nurse in charge sat down with me and went through all my medication and what to do if I had any concerns, highlighting the contact numbers should I need any further advice. My whole experience in Hull Royal Infirmary had been a pleasant one with me being put at ease by all the staff I encountered. Post op and discharge I had to call the hospital on a few occasions, again I had the help and assistance I needed. I cannot thank Mr Arzoglou and his colleagues enough on what they have done for me, it has been life changing. I can now lead a normal life, pain free, doing the things I love, gardening, walking the North Yorkshire Hills, sewing and most of all looking after my young grandchildren. Thankyou
