I found Mr Hammond very easy to talk to without embarrassment and I felt able to ask any questions. I had complete confidence in him and the surgery has been successful.

I have sat in front of my screen for a while now, wondering what I'd like to say in this review. Recent times have been a challenge; cancer, sepsis, having a stoma put in then taken out. I've met a fair few surgeons during my time! Now, I am no George Clooney at the best of times, but I'd developed a number of hernias through various incisions; I had humps and bumps of all shapes and sizes. They had started to become a challenge physically, and admittedly at times mentally too, so they had to go. I met 'Toby' Hammond at Broomfield Hospital, and in July this year, he rebuilt my abdomen. 'Rebuilt my abdomen' is quite easy to say quickly isn't it! He didn't however just rebuild my abdomen, he did it with huge skill, great care, and unrivalled compassion. In short, he squared my circle, and he has given me my life back. I have nothing but the greatest of praise for Mr Hammond. Sometimes in life we are lucky to find ourselves in the company of someone very special. That person is Mr Hammond.

Mr Hammond has a very reassuring, direct and confident approach, and this is helpful when facing surgery. He provided super helpful information and was instrumental in supporting me during the recovery period.

I have just undergone a major hernia repair and the repair of a stomach muscle (5 hour operation) in Broomfield Hospital, performed by Mr Toby Hammond. Three years ago whilst in Broomfield Hospital for a kidney removal, I had an emergency operation for part removal of the bowel, again performed by Mr Toby Hammond, being the duty consultant at the time. I do not think it is an overstatement to say he saved my life. As a 73 year old fully paid up member of the coward's club, I very much appreciate Mr Hammond's calm, clear, compassionate explanation of procedures to be undertaken. His skill and expertise is beyond question. Toby Hammond is a caring dedicated surgeon and above all else a very personable, down to earth person. I cannot praise him enough and highly recommend him. Profile

I am a consultant general & colorectal surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex. I also work at Braintree Community Hospital and Ramsay Springfield Hospital.

I perform open & laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and hernias. I have subspecialty interests in anal and pelvic floor pathology, and abdominal wall repair for complex hernias.

I graduated from Liverpool University Medical School in 1998 . I became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2003, and a fellow in 2011. I was awarded my certificate for completion of surgical training in 2012. During this time I worked as a senior registrar at St Mark's Hospital, Harrow (a national and international referral centre for intestinal and colorectal disorders) and a laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at Colchester General Hospital.

Whilst training I undertook a 2 year period of full time research. I investigated the role of biomaterials in the management of parastomal hernias and anal fistulas. This culminated in a reasearch MD, awarded by the University of London, as well as the Colon & Rectal Disease Research Foundation Prize, by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland (ACPGBI). I was also granted a travelling fellowship by the Coloproctology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

I continue to enjoy publishing and presenting on my research areas of interest. I have been invited to review articles for the Lancet, British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease, Techniques in Coloproctology and The International Journal of Surgery. I have co-authored chapters on anal fistulas for the 6th edition of Rob & Smith's Operative Surgery: Surgery of the Colon, Rectum and Anus, and for Anus: Surgical Treatment and Pathology (edited by R Cohen and A Windsor).
