When I started having problems with intense pins and needles in my right hand, I was lucky enough (because of being a professional musician) to be able to have a BAPAM consultation, free of charge with a London hand surgeon who specialised in musicians’ hand injuries – Mark Phillips. Over a Zoom consultation, Mark diagnosed suspected mild Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. He also told me at the time that one of the very best hand surgeons in the UK (with a particular interest in musicians) happened to be based in my home town of York. That was Sunil Auplish. From the first contact with Mr Auplish’s secretary, Catherine – everything was very friendly and efficient. Mr Auplish is extremely pleasant and reassuring in his explanations of treatment possibilities, while being realistic about potential risks (however miniscule they may be.) As a concert pianist, the use of my hands is clearly of paramount importance for me and he went above and beyond with the time that he spent, being prepared to answer questions and concerns outside of the allotted appointment time and showing genuine concern for my situation. He recommended an ultrasound guided steroid injection in the first place, which I had back in the summer and (touch wood) that appears to have relieved my symptoms for the time being. He also talked to me about surgery, should this eventually be necessary. Although I went to see him privately, he was also very happy to refer me so that I could have surgery on the NHS if necessary. Of course, I hope the issue doesn’t return, but with overuse as a musician, I realise it’s quite likely that it will. All I can say is that I would put total trust in whatever Mr Auplish advised and would follow his suggestions, as I know that he has the patient’s best interests at heart and would not jump into surgery unless it was necessary. However, should it be necessary - I feel confident that he would take the ultimate care and understand the psychological issues faced by a musician going through what, to many people who relied less on their hands, would be fairly routine surgery. I would recommend him 100% without hesitation and have already done so to one friend who also speaks very highly of him.

I needed bilateral trapeziectomy surgery and being right handed, I opted to have the left hand done first. Initially we discussed whether I have it done under general anaesthetic or with a block, but Sunil then gave me the option of having it done under local anaesthetic, showing me a video of a pianist undergoing the same surgery, and he explained the benefits of having it done this way. I decided that this was definitely the option that I wanted and I’m so glad I did. It meant that I didn’t have to do any pre op starving - you can eat and drink as normal (we went for a big lunch on our way to the hospital!). He has a really warm manner that puts you at ease and you could tell that the staff hold him in high regard as everyone was relaxed - throughout the surgery all of us were chatting happily. Yes, there’s a sting when the local anaesthetic starts to go in, but it very quickly goes numb and if you start to feel anything during the surgery you just let him know and he gives you a bit more. And the best bit of all…. Within an hour of getting off the operating table I was on my way home. If I’d have had it done under general anaesthetic I’d have still been in theatre recovery. I was so happy with how it had gone that I opted to have my right hand done under local anaesthetic. Both hands are now pain free and back to full mobility (listen to what the physiotherapist tells you to do and do the exercises religiously!). All in all, my care has been excellent and I would definitely recommend him.

Mr Sunil Auplish is the most delightful, charming, sympathetic and competent surgeon. He operated on my wrist in April, removing the Trapezium. I was suffering from debilitating Arthritic pain. I have the neatest of scars and do not have anymore pain. I would highly recommend him to everybody i know.

This was the first operation I'd had in 70 years I was really quite worried about it. Mr. Auplish put me completely at ease and he and his staff kept me distracted throughout the procedure. There was no pain during the surgery and now two months after the wound has almost completely gone. Having had the surgery my quality of life is so much better.

Mr Auplish was so kind, caring and reassuring during my procedure. I was very nervous but he put me at ease during my operation. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back in the future if I ever need to. At my consultation he explained everything so I understood what needed doing. A true professional who really cares about his patients and also knows how to put them at ease. Highly recommend seeing Mr Auplish.
