I have always been nervous to undergo a total knee replacement. It took me ten years to finally go under the knife on 20 October 2020. My nervousness stemmed from a life changing occurrence that happened to my mother. She had a hip replacement and was never able to walk again. My worry was that the same could happen to me too, albeit my surgery was for a knee replacement. But I needn't have worried at all. Mr Sulaiman Alazzawi from St George's Hospital, Tooting put my mind at rest. In the morning of the surgery at Epsom General, he answered all my questions and reassured me that I was in good hands. Following the surgery and after the post op x-ray, Mr Alazzawi came to visit me and said that he had studied the post-op x-ray and all was well. However, the next day, I had a small bleed on the new knee. Mr Alazzawi heard about this from the doctors doing their daily rounds and came to see me again and told me not worry about that as steps were taken to ensure that the bleeding would stop. He even went that extra mile and gave me his secretary's phone number, in case I needed to speak to him about the bleed or any other concerns I may have. I saw Mr Alazzawi in person at St George's at 6 week stage. He was pleased with the progress I had made with the recovery. I could walk without the crutches and he was pleased with that. He physically examined my operated knee and we discussed some of the exercises that would help me at mid-stage recovery period. I also mentioned that over the years my left leg had bent because of the severe arthritis. He said that I should be able to walk straight again once the swelling had gone down (which could take up to 12 months). To monitor my progress, he decided to see me face to face again in 6 months time. I was very pleased with this outcome. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Alazzawi for carrying out the total knee replacement surgery on my left knee and for his great care during the difficult period of recovery.
