Now several months on from my gall bladder removal, I am happy to agree with all the other reviews. Mr Appleton is everything you want in a consultant; he actively listens, is empathetic and gives you confidence in his treatment. My gall bladder removal was, in his words, challenging! An earlier infection has left it stuck to the bowel and he had a tricky time removing most of it (I am assured by nurses that other surgeons would have given up on key hole and gone for open surgery). Unfortunately, I had to have a drain put in which subsequently moved and I remained in hospital for a 6 days, feeling pretty ill for several of them. Mr Appleton came to see me from his private clinic (this was during the doctors' strike), assessed me, rubbed my back when I was sick and explained how he was going to sort it out with a second operation the next day. Fast forward 24 hours and I was well on the road to recovery. On day 6 I begged to go home and he reluctantly let me, acknowledging that if I felt I would recover better at home, I probably would. At no point did he make me feel silly for asking questions, he was respectful of my wishes and made me feel cared for and as if I was his most important patient. I cannot recommend him highly enough - I only wish all consultants were like him!

I am grateful to Mr. Shaun Appleton for performing splenectomy on my husband. The surgery itself was dangerous, as well as the post-operative period (about the first three weeks) because of my husband’s underlying medical condition and corresponding spleen’s weight, which was approximately 7lb. Although the advice, from another consulting team, was to abandon the whole idea, after meeting Mr. Appleton I felt that the risk was definitely worth taking, and I was not wrong. He is also incredibly patient-centered. To me, this surgeon will always be my hero. Ewa Carlton

Mr. Appleton saw me after I consulted him following confusion and dissatisfaction with others at another hospital. He was actively listening and had read the chronology I sent him in advance and asked questions about it. He was logical, caring and considerate as he explained his thinking and rationale. He explained the risks of the different types of surgery that may unfold, he was honest about the outlook following surgery for me and was not time bound in the discussion. We agreed that a gall bladder removal would be the most effective approach. This was rapidly booked by his more than competent Secretary. The admission and care were exemplary at the Shelburne Hospital and the Anaesthetist was as professional, caring and competent as the Surgeon. The whole process was smooth and polished, the consent was fully explained and all questions were answered fully. The procedure was done through Keyhole surgery and I was discharged same day clutching my stones (as per my request) with no doubt about pain management or the effects of Codeine on my digestive system. I was also discharged with Codeine and a Laxative to combat the effects of the Codeine. Post operatively, Mr. Appleton called me personally and left a message checking how was, as I could not get to my phone in time to answer. The procedure solved my problem, completely. On follow up, Mr. Appleton was engaged to the point of asking me what my experience of the whole process had been like, given the issues I had faced prior to being put under his care. A very nice point. He was delighted that I was so completely recovered as there was a suspicion that the gallbladder may not have been the only culprit. I would recommend Mr. Appleton without any hesitation.

Went to see Dr Sean after a crazy few months of being in and out of hospital since April like it has become my 2nd home :S From the off, he was amazing, considerate, caring and professional. I walked in and I was out of breath and dehydrated, and before we even began he asked me if I wanted a cup of water. I've never been treated like this by any doctor. He made sure I was ok from a human/caring perspective first. To me this shows he is a kind, compassionate/empathetic human being and these are attributes that we are losing in humanity/the world. He took the time to understand my symptoms, as I've had quite a few things happen to me since April this year and asked me questions to get to the root cause. He then provided me my options and made me feel like I was in control. Too many times I have been in hospital and made to feel stupid about the decisions I have chosen to take, JUST because it went against the doctor's advice/wishes. I wish doctors were all like Sean and took a page from his book on how to treat/talk to people/patients. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Sean. He is the kind of person you just want to be around all the time and is a trustworthy/honest person and a very caring individual. Thank you Dr Sean for the consultation and your approach. It has been a memorable experience for me and will has given me hope and respect for doctors out there, knowing that there ARE some good Doctors who don't have a chip on their shoulder or arrogance and actually are humble. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Asif
