Written by a private patient at The Chiltern Hospital - part of Circle Health Group

Mr Appleton operated on my very large para-oesophageal hernia, which had allowed my whole stomach to move up into the thorax. Communication with both Mr Appleton and also the anaesthetist on the day, was clear, informative and reassuring. Post operative care at the Chiltern hospital was excellent, and Mr Appleton visited me twice in my very short stay. After leaving hospital I was pain free and off all analgesics within a day of being home, and had no sickness, discomfort or reflux from then on. Have progressed rapidly to close to a normal diet in just a few weeks. We often forget that the key to a successful outcome is skilled and experienced surgery, and at operation we clearly put our care in the hands of the surgeon. In Mr Appleton's case, those hands are highly experienced, highly skilled and encompass a compassion and real concern for the patient's outcome and quality of life. Next month I'll be celebrating my 75th birthday at my favourite London restaurant and will be toasting the health of Mr Appleton, with grateful thanks.

Dr. Appleton and his team at Wycombe Hospital provided me with excellent care from beginning to end for my cholestectomy (gall bladder removal) day surgery. I was well briefed by nurses, a co-surgeon, and anaesthetist before the operation. Dr. Appleton checked in with me briefly before and after. And the duty nurse made sure I was ready to be discharged when I felt well enough. Check-in around 11.30am, discharge around 7pm, surgery and under anesthetic around 3.00-4.30. Everyone I experienced on the day was helpful and informative. Personal thanks to Dr. Appleton and his team for a positive experience all round!

I was out running again after less than two weeks following my recent hernia operation performed by Mr. Shaun Appleton. (Not bad at the young age of 68). Mr. Shaun Appleton is an excellent surgeon, who knew how to deal with my old scar tissue left at site by another from a proctectomy operation 4 years prior. He also understood my concerns over my sensitivity to opiates, which lower my BP at every operation and came to my aid, reacting quickly with drugs post op. I felt listened to, understood and in very good hands. He is a very pleasant man and has the skills to do an excellent job. My scar is healing nicely and internally all is as it should be. I only needed two weeks off work, doing gentle walking to start with, happy to be back to jogging again. I highly recommended Mr. Shaun Appleton, so glad we chose him, he is a great surgeon who has a excellent team backing him (anesthetist and secretary and the nurses at the hospital were good too). (Quality of overall service was a bit let down by the admin at The Shelburne Hospital and their inability to confirm the date of the operation which then impacted my personal arrangements and short notice given was given for the pre-op at the Chiltern Hospital ).

Now several months on from my gall bladder removal, I am happy to agree with all the other reviews. Mr Appleton is everything you want in a consultant; he actively listens, is empathetic and gives you confidence in his treatment. My gall bladder removal was, in his words, challenging! An earlier infection has left it stuck to the bowel and he had a tricky time removing most of it (I am assured by nurses that other surgeons would have given up on key hole and gone for open surgery). Unfortunately, I had to have a drain put in which subsequently moved and I remained in hospital for a 6 days, feeling pretty ill for several of them. Mr Appleton came to see me from his private clinic (this was during the doctors' strike), assessed me, rubbed my back when I was sick and explained how he was going to sort it out with a second operation the next day. Fast forward 24 hours and I was well on the road to recovery. On day 6 I begged to go home and he reluctantly let me, acknowledging that if I felt I would recover better at home, I probably would. At no point did he make me feel silly for asking questions, he was respectful of my wishes and made me feel cared for and as if I was his most important patient. I cannot recommend him highly enough - I only wish all consultants were like him!
