Shankar’s Consultant NHS post is based at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals. He specialises in hip & knee replacement & revision surgery and young adult hip preservation surgery. He is dual post-CCT fellowship trained – in hip & knee arthroplasty/reconstruction at the Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada (mentored by Professor Allan Gross and Dr David Backstein), and young adult hip preservation surgery at University College London Hospital, London, UK (mentored by Mr Johan Witt). Born and raised in the south of England, Shankar qualified at the University of Manchester (2003) and was trained on the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Rotation. In 2017, Shankar was awarded a PhD (University of Sheffield), for his multi-centre study investigating the “Genetics of hip osteoarthritis and hip shape”. He has several awards including the prestigious New Investigator Recognition Award at the 2014 Orthopaedic Research Society Meeting in New Orleans, USA. He was also a finalist in the Arthritis-Research UK Young Investigator competition at the 2013 British Orthopaedic Association meeting. Whilst always retaining high levels of patient safety and patient care, Shankar provides an innovative, personalised service, employing the latest evidence-based practices. Shankar’s knowledge of the latest techniques in peri-operative management and the use of complementary digital technology has led to the development of a same-day discharge programme for selective hip and knee replacement patients. Procedures Shankar performs include all aspects of hip and knee replacement and revision surgery including the minimally-invasive direct anterior approach hip replacement. This approach has been widely shown to accelerate post-operative recovery, getting patients back to work and sport quicker. Additionally, he performs the full gamut of hip preservation procedures including the periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy. Shankar’s interests include football, cricket, photography and spending time with his young family.
