Bowel problems are difficult to discuss owing to their sensitive nature, but Mr Siddiqi has such a genuinely kind, courteous and professional manner that put me at ease (as much as is possible) at every consultation. It is very unusual to feel that a doctor actually takes a personal interest in the wellbeing of his patients, so Mr Siddiqi should be commended for making me feel that he genuinely cared about improving my condition, and indeed I feel that he did his utmost to achieve the best result possible. I shall always be grateful for the life-changing treatment he provided. I felt extremely safe in his care and would highly recommend him as a surgeon, both for his skill and his manner.

Any colorectal problem can seem embarrassing for the person experiencing it as it's not always a topic people like to speak about, but seeking professional help can sometimes seem even more embarrassing having to share this problem with a complete stranger. I was so worried about my first consultation, but on meeting Mr Siddiqi as a private patient at Springfield Hospital, his professionalism and reassurance put me at ease straight away. He fully explained each examination or procedure which helped me to understand exactly what was wrong and what could be done to correct it, there was no pressure to go through with any procedure and enough information was provided enabling me to make an informed decision before agreeing to go ahead. An example of how Mr Siddiqi really goes above and beyond for his patients was following a recent major operation I had at Broomfield Hospital. I was required to stay in hospital for 4-5 days and on the day following surgery Mr Siddiqi took the time to visit me on the ward to see how I was feeling and to inform me how the surgery had gone. He also stayed in touch each day whilst I was in hospital to see how my recovery was going and told me if I had any problems or issues during that time or upon my return home to contact him. I have never come across a medical professional who really goes all out to for his patients and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a colorectal specialist. I would also like to mention Mr Siddiqi's secretaries, they have been so helpful throughout and nothing is ever too much for them, they really are a credit to him.

I have found Mr Shahab Siddiqi to be very professional in his approach, explaining everything to me in detail at every stage of my treatment. This has allowed me to be in control of my situation without the feeling of being uncertain of what is happening to me. This has paid particular benefit to my mental health, which is all important when you have Cancer. Mr Siddiqi has a very good manner with his patients putting them at ease, he comes across as very calm; controlled and shows a deep depth of knowledge. He is very accessible allowing me to call or email direct when I have concerns. One area that particularly struck me was that he consults and listens to colleagues respecting their opinions, which has translated down to my treatment. Anybody in his care is in very safe hands in my opinion .

Profile

Mr Siddiqi is a Consultant Surgeon at Broomfield Hospital. Within the Department of General Surgery, he is the Lead Surgeon for Pelvic Floor Surgery and Surgical Site Infections.

Since his appointment, he has initiated advanced robotic surgery using the da Vinci robot for pelvic floor conditions and is one of the most experienced surgeons in this type of robotic surgery in the country. Broomfield Hospital is the only centre in Essex performing robotic operations and is a BUPA preferred centre for robotic surgery. This extensive robotic surgical experience has now been used for other colorectal operations including surgery for cancer. Mr Siddiqi has also introduced new and innovative therapies for faecal incontinence and constipation.

Despite his background as a surgeon, Mr Siddiqi has extensive knowledge in medical problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic pain and Pruritus ani (anal itch) without which, he feels, he would not be able to manage complex surgical issues.

He has developed academic links with Anglia Ruskin University and is currently involved in surgical research projects in the fields of colorectal cancer and surgical infections. He is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the university and is the GI module tutor for the MSc in minimal invasive surgery.

Mr Siddiqi graduated from St. Georges Hospital Medical School, London and later undertook research at the University of London studying methods trying to improve the detection of colorectal cancer spread for which he was awarded a MD thesis. He completed his specialist surgical training in the North East Thames Higher Surgical Training programme. Mr Siddiqi obtained further advanced training in Castle Hill Hospital, Hull and Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand. In Hull, which is a leading pelvic floor centre, he undertook a Pelvic Floor Fellowship. Subsequently, Mr Siddiqi obtained the rare accreditation for Sacral Nerve Stimulation from this unit. In New Zealand, he worked as a Laparoscopic Fellow at a busy innovative unit specialising in keyhole surgery.

He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Robotic Surgery.
