I was referred to Charing Cross Hospital urology department after diagnosis of urine retention due enlarged prostate pressure on my urethra which can lead to kidney problems. Initially I resisted having the TURPS operation because published statistics indicated a 1:10 chance of incontinence following the procedure. Charing Cross urology department conducted various tests and put me onto self catheterisation (I averaged 3-5 times a day) which worked perfectly well but was awkward when not at home and particularly when travelling, on holiday etc. It was also accompanied by intermittent ecoli infections of the urinary tract. 2 week antibiotic treatments did not prevent re-occurrence so I was put on a low prophylactic dose which kept it at bay. Eventually I saw Mr Agarwal. He discussed my situation at length, listened to my concerns and answered my questions. He recommended TURPS as the gold standard procedure and reassured me on the question of incontinence. As a result I agreed to the procedure provided it was carried out by him. The procedure went without a hitch. I spent the following night in the hospital and was discharged the following afternoon after observation during the day. Residual blood in urine was very slight and disappeared completely in about 10 days. There was no discomfort after the first day. I returned immediately to normal urination with a good flow. After the operation I continued the prophylactic antibiotic until the prescription finished - about 2 weeks. I have had no return of the infection. So I am immensely grateful to Mr Agarwal whose calm demeanour and evident mastery of the procedure has returned me to a normal life with having to carry boxes of catheters with me whenever travel abroad.
