Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interest in knee problems, including trauma and complex lower limb trauma. Birmingham Medical School 1984-1989. Basic surgical training posts in Birmingham and Worcester 1989-1994, including Birmingham Accident Hospital. Registrar at the Trauma Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town 1994-5. Higher surgical training (HST) in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the Oxford Programme in 2001. Specialist knee surgery at the NOC, Oxford and Northampton. Orthopaedic Trauma Fellow at Vancouver General Hospital / University of British Columbia 2000-2001. Took up NHS post in October 2001 in Swindon, with private practice privileges accorded at the same time. Medical Qualifications: FRCS (Eng) ad eundem 2007 Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training 2001 University of BC Fellowship Certificate 2001 ATLS Instructor 2000 FRCS(Tr&Orth) 1999 FRCS (Edinburgh) 1993 MB ChB(Birmingham) 1989 Essence of practice Knee surgery is my principal subspecialty, and I undertake a comprehensive range of soft tissue, including ACL reconstruction, MACI, osteotomies and arthroplasty knee surgery. I have a specific interest in unicompartmental replacements, complex total & revision arthroplasty and sports injuries. I am an experienced traumatologist in particular surgery of multiple injuries, surgery of complex lower limb peri-articular and long bone fractures. Key aims: to keep patients as informed as possible of their condition, and to restore function, relieve symptoms and avoid problems by way of mutual consent and evidence and experience based practice. Research topics published in peer-reviewed journals or textbooks or presented at national meetings: Knee arthritis natural history and treatments, in particular TKR, UKR, ACL surgery, risk classification for TKR. Acetabular fractures, multi-ligament knee injuries, tibial plateau fractures, injuries to muscle-tendon units, revision surgery with impaction grafting, lumbar spinal stenosis, cervical spine tumour surgery, management of polytrauma, management of severe injuries, major chest injuries, hip replacement in renal transplant patients, Additional current clinically related activites include: Clinical lead for T&O department, Clinical Lead for GWH for trauma networks, Reviewer for Injury (International journal of the care of the injured), Orthopaedic surgeon to Swindon Town FC, Faculty on Stryker (TKR & hip fracture), Biomet (Oxford Uni) and Arthrocare (RF probe) courses, Trust’s Transfusion Committee member and T&O department research lead.
