I first met Paul Thiruchelvam at Charing Cross hospital when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It didn’t take me long to realise that I was in very good hands, I was lucky. Mr Thiruchelvam is clearly very experienced and knowledgeable; he was thorough in his explanations at each step and also reassuring (more so as we got to know each other). In my panic, he cautioned me to take my time in considering the surgery options, to make sure I was making the best decision for me. He was absolutely right. Both he and Mr Aadil Khan were very supportive as they helped me navigate the decision making; at no point did I feel pressured or rushed into making a decision. Under the care of Mr Thiruchelvam and Mr Khan I had a mastectomy with a DIEP reconstruction. The surgery went well, and the aesthetic outcome is better than I could’ve hoped for, both in terms of shape and symmetry. My post op recovery was smooth, relatively swift, and the pain was minimal - Dr Matt Brown’s pre-hab and pain management advice I am certain were a large contributing factor in this. Mr Thiruchelvam works with a fantastic team of colleagues and together take a holistic approach. The team includes Dr Suzy Cleator, oncologist; Amelia & Helen, breast care nurses who were always on hand or at the end of the phone; Neil, radiologist, and Sarah, Kathryn & Fiona who were so understanding with each scan, biopsy and other related procedures; and Rebecca Sellars, physio, are all reassuring, supportive and incredibly knowledgeable. Critical to all of this is Michelle, his PA, who is so helpful and efficient with organising scans/tests/appointments. I would recommend Mr Thiruchelvam very highly and without hesitation. I am so grateful to him and his colleagues for their skill, care and empathy, and all they have done for me during this challenging time.

I have very confidence in Paul as a surgeon. I do feel that he and his consultant colleagues could sometimes be more empathetic- this may well be down to lack of time. But at the end of the day it is his skill as a surges in rather than his bedside manner that I appreciate

Paul was compassionate through the whole process, from diagnosis, tests and surgery as well as aftercare. He has a gentle manner, giving all the information and leaving time for the information to be processed. Paul was respectful of decisions and did not try to persuade me in any direction. He has an excellent team of PA and medical staff. They were all very helpful. I had my first appointment at Charing Cross hospital and a subsequent one too. there was no difference whether it was NHS or private. I received the same compassionate care from him.
