Following my routine mammogram, I was recalled for further investigation at Charing Cross Hospital - this involved additional mammograms and a biopsy. In Mid December I first met Paul Thiruchelvam who delivered the news that I had high grade DCIS. Although this was a shock he reassured me that this was very treatable and from that moment I felt in the best possible hands. Through my private health cover all subsequent appointments took place at King Edward VII Hospital. At the initial appointment Paul went through all the options available, which although at the time felt a little overwhelming, on reflection I really appreciate that I was given all the information to make the best decision for me. At no point did I feel pressured for my treatment to take a set path. At each appointment everything was thoroughly explained with time given for me to go home and consider future steps. Paul arranged for me to have an MRI and also for me to meet with Adil Khan who explained in detail the reconstruction process if I chose to have a mastectomy. I decided that the best option for me was to have a WLE (lumpectomy) on the left breast and bilateral therapeutic mammoplasty on the healthy right breast. Paul arranged for me to meet with Daniel Leff who was to perform the surgery on my right breast. The area removed ended up being 6cm. The operation has been a great success with clear margins achieved and no cancer found. To say I am pleased with the results is a complete understatement, not only is the health outcome the best news but the aesthetic results are far beyond what I was hoping for - with a natural shape and great symmetry. Mr Thiruchelvam is supported by such a strong team : Breast care nurses Amelia Cook and Helen Froyd - who after each consultation took time to ensure that I fully understood what had been discussed. They regularly called me to check how I was doing and were always available to answer my questions. I truly appreciate their kindness and care. Neil, the radiologist who somehow found a workaround when equipment was not performing as it should, I don't know how he did this, but I am so grateful as without his expertise my operation would have been postponed. He was supported by Fiona who was so lovely, helping to keep me calm and made the multiple mammograms bearable. Dr Matt Brown - the pain specialist who went through in detail how I could prepare for the operation and what to do after for a speedy recovery. A thorough appointment and he was so patient and kind. Michelle Wright (Paul's PA) so incredibly efficient, setting up necessary appointments and I know she worked tirelessly to chase up my biopsy results. Daniel Leff - the surgeon who worked in tandem with Paul - the surgical dream team. I feel so lucky to have had Paul as my consultant, he is kind, compassionate and so incredibly knowledgable. I would have no hesitation in recommending him and his amazing team. I am forever grateful.
