29th January 2014

I recently under went a minor operation at the Fitzwilliam hospital for the first time as an out patient. The ward itself was lovely and clean, bright and open and the staff were pleasant and polite. I could see lots of coming and goings from both staff and other patients. I didn't feel isolated or all alone. I do however feel that it would have been much more comforting and reassuring if the Nurses on duty at the time had gone out of there way a bit more, to explain to me what was going to happen to me leading up to the time of my operation. For example 5 minutes after I arrived on the ward, one of the nurses could have come over to me and said your Doctor will be here shortly to talk to you and we will take your blood pressure, then get you to put a gown on over your clothes and someone else will be along to make sure all your details are correct. if you are not happy or have any questions to ask us, then we will do our best to answer them for you. While your waiting for your doctor you may read or just sit quietly. For 20 minutes I just sat and waited to see what was going to happen, the nurse did come over to me and take my blood pressure, but I wasn't told anything or asked anything or even told where the toilet was, I had to ask for that myself. If the Nurses had been really busy or there was an emergency that had come in I could have understood them not having time, but there wasn't on this occasion. When I was ready to go for my operation the staff in theatre welcomed me with open arms and went the extra mile to make sure I was ok all the time, talking to me, reassuring me that all was ok, evening holding my hands while the operation was taking place. It was just so much more personal and made such a difference, and by going the extra mile too reassure me also helped the Surgeon, because I was more relaxed for the operation which then took less time to do. I would like to say how important it is to see the same Doctor, consultant all the way thorough when having treatment and am really pleased this is way it's done at the Fitzwilliam hospital. Having said all the above I still feel that on the whole my experience was a rewarding one. The reputation of the Fitzwilliam Hospital speaks for itself, but staff do need to keep going the extra mile for them to keep the reputation they have truly earned. I will highly recommend both the Fitzwilliam Hospital and Mr Leong to friends and family, whether it's private or NHS service they require.
