I needed to have my aortic valve replaced recently and Mr Briffa was designated as the surgeon. My first meeting with him occurred when I was retained in the hospital ( Northern General Hospital in Sheffield) following an angiogram that was obviously not good. The angiogram consultant said I could not go home until an operation date was set and that it had to be within 2 weeks. Shortly afterwards Mr Briffa came to see me and not only did he develop a plan very quickly but he personally phoned, in my presence, whoever was responsible for creating the operations schedule and arranged a date for my operation. The impression this gave me was that he was a decisive person who made sure that what he wanted, would happen. I like people like that! I immediately went home; returned on the day for the operation: had the valve replaced and went on with my life. I only spent 5 days in the Cardiology Dept at the this hospital. That might seem quite short for a major operation but I had been well prepared. The Dept runs an educational programme and have pre-operation and post-operation classes which are very useful and worthwhile. I was also very impressed by the care given to me on the ward. Everyone seemed to have a great attitude. They were very competent at the job and had a friendly manner, no matter what you asked them to do. I can't say the experience related to this operation was good because I was very concerned about the outcome for most of the time. However, I know that I couldn't have been cared for by a better group of people and I thank them all for that.

On being told that I had a heart problem,I was suprised because I had no symtoms, plus thefact I keep myself fit and active.Meeting mr briffa I new that I was in safe hands.Lots of tests.Thenhe surgested he proceeds with operation to repair a leaking mistral valve. On march 24,2014 the fantastic nurses got me ready for the operation the next morning.I remember entering the thearte and then waking up in intensive care with wires machines attached, but the most important part of what took place in the operating thearte was that mr briffa went out of his way to speak to lynda (wife) and explained what took place and reassured her that it was 100% sucessfull. Now, the part played by the nhs nurses, they were the bees knees, the care was out of this world, through intensive care, progressive care, and the general ward, staff from all over the world, working as a team,to give me care that perfect.long live the NHS,thank you mr briffa.david skinner and family

Nursing staff first rate throughout the procedure (by-pass). They were brilliant at sourcing drugs upon discharge when chemist was very dilatory. Long wait for dispensing upon leaving hospital!

I had been quite ill for some time and was admitted to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield for heart valve repair. During the operation other problems were found which the consultant also repaired. Mr Norman Briffa is absolutely the best! He gave me my life back, better than winning the lottery. I never realised how quickly I would recover from such surgery and am amazed at how well I now feel. The whole team are totally dedicated and they obviously love their work, nothing is too much trouble. Anyone who is waiting for an operation here should be confident that they will be in very safe hands.
