Specialises in: General surgery
I am a Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon with Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust (MEHT), working primarily at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. I also work at Braintree Community Hospital and Ramsay Springfield Hospital. I trained at St George's Hospital Medical School in London and graduated in 1986 with MBBS (London) In 1991 I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 1995 I gained a Master of Surgery Degree from the University of London following submission of a thesis studying the potential relationship between the organism Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and Crohn's disease in humans. In 1997 I worked at Flinders University of South Australia as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer. In 1999 I was appointed as Consultant Surgeon at MEHT. Since 2011 I have been Clinical Director for Surgery at MEHT.
Mr Richardson was brought into help my Mother after her bowel cancer operation went wrong, it wasn't an easy fix and Mr Richardson made us all feel at such ease, he was so kind and reassuring and made sure we all understood what was going to happen, he made sure my mother was kept comfortable while he prepared for surgery. He took her views into consideration, as the last words she spoke to him before being put out was "Please don't let me have an stoma bag." He did /everything/ within his power to make that happen, and he did! Much to the displeasure of his team, he took a risk and done the longer, more difficult surgery to achieve this. He promised myself and my family that once he'd completed the surgery he'd come and find us and personally let us know the results, and how my mother was. Normally surgeons don't actually keep to what they've said, but to true to his nature and form Mr Richardson came and found us, and told us exactly what happened, what he'd chosen to do, and the risks involved in that. He reassured us fully and saved my mother's life in all honesty. Not only did he help my mother in her time of need, he took her on as one of his own NHS patients, because rightly so my mother had more trust in him than she did in her own doctor. He then proceed to have to correct another one of this doctors mistakes when my mother was readmitted later on. I can honestly say he's one of the best doctors I've seen for making sure you understand what's going to happen, for making you feel reassured and for making the patient feel that he really cares. Just wanted to say a big thank you to him for all his hard work looking after my mother, and the constant care he gives, even in his follow up appointments. What an amazing doctor he is, the NHS could do with a lot more like him.

Unfortunately I’ve not had a good experience with Nigel Richardson. I was referred to him after my surgery was unsuccessful, yet he made me feel like a nuisance.

Mr Richardson is, I think, aware of the respect I have for him as a Surgeon and as a person after two surgical procedures in the last 8 months. My comments here are only meant for those yet to face surgery under his hands and his team. You could not be in better care than under this special person who chose Surgery as his work. Matt.

Mr Richardson hasbeen there for me over a considerable length of time. He has alwaysmade himself available to me as an outpatient following several periods of hospitalisation. He is an extremely warm and friendly person and goes to great lengths to explain in simple terms his diagnosis and recommended treatments. One cannot fail to have complete faith in him, confident that he really cares. I consider him to be one in amillionand am so thankful that he is my consultant. He is truly fantastic, with a great team to back him up. Thank you Nigel Richardson.

I was treated by Mr Richardson as an inpatient and visited his outpatients clinic to get the results of my scan. Both my wife and I found that he was an excellent listener and explained my results in a way that was very easy for us to understand. He fully answered all of our questions in the simplest way and was very understanding. We both felt totally at ease and I would say that he is the best consultant that I have been treated by.

What a wonderful person. Not just a doctor he cares. He took time to go through my scan and test results. My husband came with me and he listened to both of our concerns and treated us so well. Whilst I don't like going to hospital if I had a choice I would see Mr Richardson anytime. However I would like to meet his mother, she bought him a beautiful fountain pen for his birthday. If anyone needs ideas for his next birthday, hand writing lessons would be a good idea !! Thank you broomfield and thank you Mr Richardson xx

I didn't have to wait around at all for my appointment. In fact I saw Mr Richardson before the appointment time, which was excellent. I found Mr Richardson to be a good listener, giving me plenty of time to describe the problems that I was having. He asked lots of pertinent questions about my condition, which was comforting. After an examination, he also explained what the different options might be for future treatment. All in all it was a pleasant experience today visiting both Mr Richardson and Broomfield Hospital Out Patients clinic.
