I started with severe sciatica pain in February 2020, I received treatment in February and March but then due to Covid 19 my treatment stopped. I was then sent for physiotherapy in September and I was finally referred to Mr Rath at The Walton Centre in December. In April 2021 I first met Mr Rath via an online consultation, as Covid restrictions were limiting foot fall through The Walton Centre. At this time we discussed all of my options and we decided that the best way forward for me was to proceed with surgery. Mr Rath explained everything to me in a very clear manner, answering all of my questions and putting me at ease with his open and friendly manner. He also explained that there would be an unknown wait for this to happen as he was one of only 4 people able to do this operation in the country. I finally met Mr Rath face to face at the beginning of August, where he again went over everything but in more detail, explaining in such a way that I knew exactly what the operation consisted of, what was required and the way we were going to proceed. He asked if I had any questions for him to which I replied that when I came in I had an A4 page full of them but that he had answered them already. Due to his diligence he asked me to check, and as I thought, he had covered everything. He then wished me well and told me that he would see me on the morning of my operation. On the morning of my operation I was checked into The Walton Centre by their very friendly and efficient staff. I was treated in a very professional manner and put at my ease in a very trying time. Then Mr Rath came to see me again, smiling as usual, and again went over the procedure. Just his attitude helped so much to relieve me of my last minute nerves. I then met my anaesthetist and the rest of the surgical team where all final checks were completed, and where everyone agreed to proceed. The last thing I remember is Mr Rath reassuring me with his smile. I woke in in the recovery ward where the staff were brilliant and then Mr Rath came in to see how I was doing. He told me that the operation went smoothly and he told me what was now required of me. Unknown to me at that time, Mr Rath had already telephoned my parents to inform them of the success of the operation and to reassure them of my condition. This is going above and beyond, many thanks. I was taken to a ward to complete final checks and Mr Rath came to see me to check up on me again and to make sure everything was functioning as should be. He was informed by the nursing staff that I had been up and walking around within an hour of arriving which both him and myself were very pleased with. He then started the discharge procedure. At 8pm that evening, I walked out of The Walton Centre unaided, in very little pain and without the use of a crutch, something that I have needed to walk for the last year. Everyone at home were amazed at the condition I was in, they couldn't believe how well I looked and how much better I was walking. The next day I received a telephone call from Mr Rath to again check on me, this man is amazing, doesn't he ever rest? He then told how to proceed in the coming weeks and that he would see me again soon for follow-up visits. Such dedication. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Rath from the bottom of my heart, this has literally changed my life, Kindest regards, Gary Pemberton
