I was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2019.
A Pre op meeting with Mr Bittar was arranged, for myself and family. I and my family were obviously scared and worried as it was quite a big tumour. Mr Bittar put us all at ease with his manor, he explained everything that would happen And to trust him. I cannot thank him and his team enough , The care and treatment from the hospital medical staff was amazing. I have now finished all treatment and have been given the all clear and have returned to work after 10 months. My eternal thanks to Mr Bittar and the entire team. God bless you all.

I had occasion to write to Mr Bittar today, as follows:
Hi, tomorrow, 19 January, will be ten years to the day that you operated on me (quadruple bypass). Whilst I appreciate that you are a busy man, I just wanted to say thank you again for all that you and the staff at Lancashire Cardiac Centre did for me. I am now 72 years of age and still working, albeit part time. I doubt I would have been here but for your intervention. Thank you, again, sir. You are a very special man. Colin
The care and reassurance during the tests prior to my operation could not have been improved upon.
I saw Mr Bittar regularly both before and after the procedure and his presence alone was comforting.
I was discharged from the Lancashire Cardiac Centre on day four.
To sum up in one word, outstanding..

In 2011 I was informed that I had a massive tumour in my lungs. I was assigned to Mr. Bittar at the Vic in Blackpool who answered the many, many questions my family and I had concerning the prognosis. He was completely calm and honest with us. I had confidence in him but knew that the op might not go well. However, it went extremely well and now eight and half years later I am in my seventies and living a very active life. Thank you is in sufficient but what else can you say. I remember him and the team with gratitude many times.

My attendance at Blackpool Victoria for the pre-op examination made me aware of the unique ability all staff possess in pulling together and working as a team.
The term " big happy family" springs to mind.
With Professor Bittar leading the team, a plan was hatched and on the appointed day, I was made most welcome and prepared for my life saving surgery.
With echoes of " can you hear me and do you know where you are" I was gently awoken to find the main event had finished and I didn't feel a thing!
Recuperation was as equally uneventful, from intensive care to day care to home.
Behind the scenes,the support team helping my recovery were making my stay a most memorable and pleasant experience.
My minimally invasive aortic surgery has been a complete success, and all completed without my feeling any pain or indeed taking any painkillers.
May I wish Professor Bittar and all his team a huge " thank you, " for all the incredible remedial and life changing surgery that keeps so many of us enjoying a full and active life.
In summary I would say, Professor Bittar - Perfection at its best

The most recent cardio operation undertaken at Blackpool Victoria was to replace an aortic valve which had been two-leaf since birth, and was in need of changing. The valve was replaced with one made from bovine tissue, and this has three-leaf, a more efficient design which most people are born with. The surgery was undertaken using micro techniques with minimal disturbance to the sternum. Release from hospital took 5 days and no pain killers were required beyond this point.
I was also impressed with the process from diagnosis through to recovery, and the team work, even between Blackpool and Preston.
In relation to the scale of complexity, and applied skills in undertaking the operation, my improvement wish is of relatively small importance. Appetite and sense of smell took weeks to recover. Helpful steps along the way were Complan and Iron tablets, I made little use of hospital food.
I am lucky to live in Lancashire, and we are lucky to have the skills of these NHS people.
Profile
I am a cardiothoracic surgeon, my practice is mixed. In cardiac surgery I have a special interest in aortic surgery, minimally invasive aortic surgery, I also perform the general cardiac operations ( CABG, OPCAB and valve surgery). In thoracic surgery, I deal with chest wall, lung, pleural and mediastinal surgical diseases. I have special interest in the minimally invasive approach (video assisted thoracoscopic procedures-VATS lobectomy) and fractured ribs fixation.
I am interested in research; my qualification is a Medical Doctorate M.D. from Manchester University in 2007. My thesis was based on inflammatory response to the use of cardiopulmonary bypass in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This response was linked to certain genotypes of a certain polymorphisms.
My current affiliation is with the University of Salford, I am collaborating with researchers studying the myocardial cell dysfunction, the inflammatory response and its effect on the conduits that used in cardiac surgery.Recently I was appointed as a professor (Hon)@ the University of Salford.
