It all started one night on getting into bed, with losing all feeling and movement in one leg.
Apart from treatment for high blood pressure, for a number of years, there were no warning signs: the severe pain came after getting into bed.
Both my parents had a history of vascular problems and in the case of my mother, stroke; it was for this reason, that my immediate thought was that I was having a similar problem.
However, it was diagnosed that I had undergone an aortic dissection.
Mr. Bittar and his team have replaced my aorta and valve and I feel that I have made a very good recovery in the three months since my operation. They and the nursing team at the Lancashire Cardiac Centre have been excellent in treating me as an individual, always finding the time to answer my many questions and giving me reassurance when I needed it.
However, I still have pain in my leg; I am due to have a C.T. scan to see if a vascular procedure would help to alleviate this.

After a few years of complaining of shortage of breath during walking I was sent by my GP for tests resulting in the need for triple heart bypass surgery and was referred to Professor Bittar for the surgery.
As anyone can imagine it was a very concerning if not frightening time for me as I was naturally concerned of the outcome.
The Covid 19 situation also added to my fears and obviously caused a temporary delay.
However Professor Bittars secretary kept me informed of the situation during my wait and was very comforting in her nature.
The Professor rang me also and reassured me of the situation and in fact had a very calming influence.
He came to see me on the morning of the operation to make sure I understood the surgery.
This is the man I am sure I owe my life to and Professor Bittar and his team where excellent in their care and understanding and not forgetting their professionalism which is second to none.
From going in to Blackpool to coming out of Blackpool Cardiac centre I was treated with extreme care and attention and dignity.
I am extremely grateful to the professor and his team.
I have nothing but praise for him and his team.

Professor Bittar removed a section of my right lung that set me back on the road to good health. He spoke to me before the surgery, the day after and then again as a follow up a few months later: this wasn’t his secretary, it was him. He clearly cares and acts with professionalism and integrity. I will always be grateful. Thank you sir.

Prof. Bittar carried out a VATS wedge resection of my lung to remove some small nodules. When I first met Prof. Bittar he was very approachable and inspiring and explained the procedure. This was my third surgery with him, and I always feel very safe in his hands, and those of his surgical team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. I was out of hospital only 4 days post surgery, very little pain or scarring, and able to resume my normal lifestyle very quickly. My greatest thanks to Prof. Bittar and his team. Also to the team on Ward 38, who are still amazing even during the extra pressures of the COVID pandemic.
Profile
I am a cardiothoracic surgeon, my practice is mixed. In cardiac surgery I have a special interest in aortic surgery, minimally invasive aortic surgery, I also perform the general cardiac operations ( CABG, OPCAB and valve surgery). In thoracic surgery, I deal with chest wall, lung, pleural and mediastinal surgical diseases. I have special interest in the minimally invasive approach (video assisted thoracoscopic procedures-VATS lobectomy) and fractured ribs fixation.
I am interested in research; my qualification is a Medical Doctorate M.D. from Manchester University in 2007. My thesis was based on inflammatory response to the use of cardiopulmonary bypass in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This response was linked to certain genotypes of a certain polymorphisms.
My current affiliation is with the University of Salford, I am collaborating with researchers studying the myocardial cell dysfunction, the inflammatory response and its effect on the conduits that used in cardiac surgery.Recently I was appointed as a professor (Hon)@ the University of Salford.
