I had a total hip replacement in November 2019 which has been a great success. Mr Longstaff performed the surgery and During the initial outpatient assessment he spent time to understand my background and my needs and fears as a patient, making clear what the process, risks and outcomes could be for someone my age (47). On the day of the operation he met with me prior to the procedure and although this was a quick visit he again took me through a summary of what was going to happen. Post operation he gave me a thumbs up when I going to recovery to show it had gone to plan which was reassuring. He came to see me on the ward to explain the procedure went well. I did hear Mr Longstaff give the ward nurses a few instructions about the requirements for medication and blood clot injections. The nurses didn't follow his instructions however following their own protocols. Something that could be improved for the deliver of care as a whole team. In follow up outpatients I have seen Mr Longstaff twice and he explained the X-Ray scans, the devices used for the THR and we had a god discussion about progress and how to manage risks like dislocation. Overall very happy with the experience and I would regard Mr Longstaff as a surgical legend who has given me a second go at an active life.
