Last Xmas 2021 I developed chronic lower back pain which would come on after walking a few minutes, and I would have to stop and rest until the pain subsided. After a period of rest it didn't settle down so I sought some physio and osteopath treatment but neither did they help. My GP referred me to my muscle skeletal dept for further examination but due to the NHS backlog I heard nothing and the pain still persisted and was affecting my daily life. I had an mri scan done to determine the cause of the pain and discovered I have a slipped disc (spondylolithesis). After several months without any improvement my sister suggested I try the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle as she had treatment there previously and received great service. I made enquiries and found Mr Kanna Knanalingham and am so pleased I did. I was able to book an initial consultation fairly soon and I provided my Sri scan results. By this point I was beginning to think that nothing would help other than surgery, but Mr Knanalingham put my mind at rest and assured me that he could help without having to resort to surgery, which is a great relief. After going through the scan results in greater detail and discussing what I had tried, he suggested a course of neuropathic pain agent (pregabalin) for a three month period and or a targeted epidural injection. After two months of taking pregabalin I found it didn't help relieve my pain symptoms so after reporting this back to Mr Knanalingham he suggested the epidural injection and I had that done about four weeks ago. The procedure was painless and the following day or so afterwards I felt an improvement. Since then I have tested myself with a few walks of 4 or 5 miles in length. and have been able to complete them without having to stop. There has been no chronic pain. I would like to say a huge big thank you to Mr Knanalingham for giving me back my life. I would definitely recommend him to other patients. He has kept ins touch with a follow up meeting so I could feedback the results of the injection. He has a great reassuring manner. I would also thank The Alexandra Hospital for looking after me so well during my visit. I am aware that then effects of the injection will wear off but will go back to see him as and when necessary.

I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma (Acromegaly). From day one at my consultation, and at every stage thereafter, Mr Gnanalingham explained in depth, with clarity, honesty and thoughtfulness all that was involved going forward with transsphenoidal surgery. As a consequence I felt safe and secure under his care. This enabled me to approach the day of my operation with a sense of calm and without fear. The successful outcome of the surgery has resulted in a vastly improved quality of life for me. During the past year I have experienced so many positive changes, with all of the symptoms relating to my pituitary adenoma having resolved. I feel better now than I have done for many years, and will never be able to thank Mr Gnanalingham enough for carrying out the surgery, and for his excellent care throughout my journey. I would also like to mention that I found Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust excellent in it’s delivery of great care during all my visits and hospital stay.

I am a 62 yrs young equestrian who’s horses are my life. I was suffering with debilitating pain in my back and neuropathy pain down my right leg and foot. I was unable to sleep sit or walk properly. My everyday work load was a struggle even getting dressed was a task. I was referred to Mr Kanna Gnanalingham and on first meeting was put at my ease with his compassion and understanding of my issues and his reassurance that he could help me. He was open to all my questions and ordered the relevant tests to evaluate the situation keeping me fully informed at all time. On reviewing my results he explained my problem. I had an L4/L5 grade1 degenerative slip disc with lateral recess narrowing. Mr Gnanalingham prescribed pain relief but to no avail. I then had a caudal epidural but again no relief my only option left was surgery. Mr Gnanalingham was reassuringly optimistic that I would be riding again after recovery as long as I understood the recovery time and didn’t rush it. He explained about the procedure and also what could go wrong. I felt thoroughly supported and informed and with that I agreed to go ahead. My surgery was scheduled for 19/3/22. I was thoroughly supported throughout my pre ops and visits and questions I needed to ask would be answered promptly by Mr Gnanalingham. Nothing was too much trouble and I didn’t feel at any time I could not contact his secretary and Mr Gnanalingham would reply. On the morning of my admission Mr Gnanalingham came to see me and reassured me about my procedure. His anaesthetist and physiotherapist followed not long after. I awoke from my operation to the voice of Mr Gnanalingham asking me if I had any pain and to my shock after nearly two years of leg pain I was able to say “no I have no leg pain”. He also explained that he had found and removed a cyst that was at L4/5 and it had been sent to the labs for testing and that all else went well. I was able to get up and walk the next day with no pain in my leg on walking, sitting or lying down. During my recovery in hospital Mr Gnanalingham was in contact with me and visited me and went through again the outcome of my procedure. After discharge home, I was able to contact his secretary at any time and he would ring me back to answer any query I had. My follow up zoom calls with Mr Gnanalingham where very informative going through my procedure and my results together and he explaining what I was looking at in the before and after scans. I felt these were helpful in understanding how important it was to follow Mr Gnanalingham’s instructions on the do’s and don’ts on recovery to get the best possible outcome. I would not hesitate to recommend a more professional and dedicated consultant. Thanks to his expertise care and attention I am now back in the saddle.

I have been treated for back pain by Mr Gnanalingham since October 2021 and have always been greeted by his friendly smile which immediately puts me at ease. I also find it very reassuring that he takes time to listen to my never straightforward, symptoms. I had a successful lower spine back injection in May 2022 and further advice about medications has helped even more. Should I need to I will not hesitate to consult him again and will recommend him to others.

My initial consultation with Mr. Gnanalingham was because I was suffering from extreme back pain and found great discomfort when attempting to walk. He asked a series of questions and this was followed by a physical examination. Various tests were then recommended, which have since been carried out. I have had further consultations with Mr. Gnanalingham since and have always been very impressed with his professionalism and courtesy. I always felt very comfortable with him and able to ask questions. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Gnanalingham and can only thank him for his care and attention”
