I saw Mr Mc Farlane as biopsies has shown I had early-stage low-grade prostate cancer. He was very patient, despite the fact that I must have over-run my allotted appointment time, and took the trouble to answer all my numerous questions about a very difficult clinical decision ("treatment or not, and if so, what treatment") fully and fairly. The only reason I have not given him full marks for the "trust" criterion is that I felt that as a surgeon he was a little inclined to favour radical prostatectomy over other equally valid treatments. However, I must temper this comment with the observation that he was able to talk authoritatively about the full range of prostate cancer treatments, and I came out at the end of the appointment feeling there had been a full and balanced discussion about what was (to me) a very important issue.
