I was admitted to Kingston Hospital with chest/abdominal pain and high temperatures on 15/Sep. After an initial misdiagnosis at A&E of pneumonia, I was passed into Mr Deguara’s care to determine my complaint. This process took over 3 days, during which time I was kept fully informed by Mr Deguara, who visited me every day. Despite my case being complex (as was discovered during surgery) I always felt in good hands and confident that a solution would be found. Once the decision to operate was proposed Mr Deguara fully explained his plan, the issues/risks inherent, and how the team would proceed. I felt fully confident in his plan, and agreed to the surgery. The operation was very challenging and took over 4 hours, but Mr Deguara immediately visited my anxious family to reassure them that I was well in recovery. He also visited me the next morning and commented that I looked better than he felt, he must have been exhausted. I saw him many times before my discharge, when all my questions were fully answered. We met again about 4 weeks after discharge, when he gave me the results of the biopsy. Despite these not being what I wanted to hear, Mr Deguara handled this with great sensitivity and assurance, and I left the meeting with less worries than I might have expected. We have since had our last meeting and I have been passed onto a monitoring protocol as a result of the biopsy result. I do not expect to see Mr Deguara again unless I need further surgery, but I am very happy that fate delivered him to me as my surgeon for this episode in my life journey.

Following investigations I was given clear, concise information as to what surgery was required, a cholecystectomy. This was carried out very quickly. The surgeon and anaesthestist, (in fact all staff), were very professional and I was treated very well. I had one night stay in hospital, and have made a full recovery. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Deguara, and the New Victoria hospital to anyone who needs surgery.

Mr Deguara has a bright, brisk, positive manner. As he listens carefully he instilled confidence in me. At my first consultation I was loathe to contemplate removal of my gall bladder. He carefully explained the risks and benefits of surgery, gave me the EIDO patient information sheet and I was happy to think about it. An MRI scan was fixed with a 2nd consultation 6 weeks later. In the meantime a further incidence of passing a gallstone persuaded me of the need for surgery which was arranged at the 2nd consultation. I opted to leave having an ERCP for a later date after surgery as I had had no further stones. Surgery took place 4 months from my first consultation with Mr Deguara. I felt I had had the best of care. Mr Deguara told me during his post op round that he was concerned that the cholangiogram showed a distal CBD stone so an urgent outpatient ERCP appointment was booked. I stayed in hospital overnight and was discharged with a drain which had to be kept in until the ERCP. The ERCP was done 9 days later at St George’s. The drain removed by Mr Deguara the following morning. I found I did not require painkillers after 4 or 5 days. Movement was difficult having had abdominal surgery, getting out of bed in particular. I needed help for about a week. Low seating was not an option for about 2 weeks. My appetite was small and I felt tired and lacking energy for several weeks. But 8 weeks on I felt completely back to normal. I had adjusted my diet 4 months earlier cutting out fatty foods and continue to do that in large part. One thing that amazed me was how insignificant the surgery scars are. Coming out of hospital with four patches and a drain had made me imagine otherwise. I was delighted to present myself to Mr Deguara after having had a holiday looking and feeling fit and healthy. I am very grateful to him and all the NHS staff in Kingston Hospital for my care.

I saw Mr Deguara as I had experienced a problem with Acid in my stomach. He listened to me as I described my symptoms. He asked questions and then made suggestions as to what should be done to diagnose my problem and find a solution. From there he carried out a Gastostropy, ultrasound scan and blood tests in order to rule things out. He was thorough in his investigations and kept me up to date with his findings. Mr Deguara was considerate and empathetic throughout and my initial nerves of having camera put down my throat were dispelled by his professional manner.

I absolutely trust Dr Deguara. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional and caring. I had my husband with me at my last visit. He is American. Mr Deguara was able to relate my treatment to practices in US which gave my husband confidence about the extent of Mr Deguara broader research and knowledge. Mr Deguara is kind and patient. He responses to questions clearly and with care. He respect my views and takes them into consideration with regards to the treatment I need. I feel strongly that I am in the best hands possible. My sincere thanks and gratitude.
