Mr Lewis gave me a new knee in 2015 after about 2-3 weeks of post operative pain my knee is almost perfect. Two weeks ago he operated on my other knee and after only 2-3 days it was simply uncomfortable it’s so good I have to be reminded to use my walking stick.I would point out I do the physio and take the medicine as directed. The pain relief programme is very effective. Finally my first knee is almost perfect only because I can’t kneel. Its an expensive procedure but well after worth the money
I have been fortunate to have had two orthopaedic operations carried out at Goring Hall Hospital both of which done by Mr. James Lewis orthopaedic surgeon. One for a complete Left hip replacement (March 2016) and a more recent CKR complete Right Knee Replacement (Feb. 2019). Both of which have been a complete success for which l cannot thank James Lewis and his very professional team enough. Anyone about to have on orthopaedic operation must feel a little anxious. But from the initial meeting with James Lewis he puts you completely at ease. Explaining that you will have a spinal anaesthetic, the operation will take about 60-90 minutes, you will feel no pain, have you walking a few steps within 2hrs, only 1 dissolving stitch and super glue to heal the wound. This I found at first very hard to believe, but it is completely true. On the day you arrive for the operation a very friendly nurse escorts you to your room to settle you in and you get ready for the theatre. Then the anaesthetist visite you and explains the procedure he carries out regarding the spinal anaesthetic followed by James Lewis who gives you a brief time scale with any after effects and answers any questions you might have. These two visits really puts your mind at rest, completely at ease and makes you feel you couldn’t be in any more safer and confident hands. After the operation and your back in your room a very welcome cup of tea and a nice meal goes down so well. Then James Lewis visits you to report how the operation went to plan and much to my surprise helps you out of bed and walking a few steps. With no pain just a few minor aches which soon disappear. All the time you are in Goring Hall you are under constant attention by a very professional and attentive team of nurses, physio and doctors. When leaving Goring Hall you are given all the medication for home use with a sheet of instructions and guidelines compiled by James Lewis which I found very useful. With a recommendation of hiring a (Game Ready) ice therapy machine which is delivered to your home and speeds up the leg recovery. An excellent piece of easy to use equipment. This is then collected from your home when finished with. I cannot thank you enough James Lewis and your very professional team for all your excellent work, kindness with wonderful results on both operations in a happy and comfortable environment and thank you Goring Hall Hospital. On finding out that I needed a knee replacement I was very apprehensive but Mr. James Lewis reassured me that it would be the best course of action and practically pain free. I am happy to say this has been the case! It is now six weeks since my operation and I am walking normally and unaided. I would recommend anyone needing this operation to go along and talk to him. My short stay at Goring Hall Hospital was all I could have wished for, friendly and helpful staff in clean and pleasant surroundings. A trip to visit a friend in Australia now seems very likely to happen.
I would like to say how very grateful I am to Mr Lewis after having had complete knee replacement surgery at Goring Hall Hospital. Everything worked out better than I expected, even though I already had complete confidence after being exceptionally well informed about all aspects of my treatment. Mr Lewis’ approach and explanations instilled only confidence going forward with this procedure. There is always a certain amount of anxiety before any operation but I knew I was in good hands after such meticulous checks and information beforehand. This operation was much less painful than I expected and I was able to move around and exercise the very next day without too much discomfort. My mobility was such that even I was impressed. Mr Lewis’ team at Goring Hall could not have been more thoughtful and attentive. After going home on the third day I was far more mobile than I expected and my pain levels were far less than I expected. The care advice pack I was given when going home has been very helpful indeed in my home recovery . I am so impressed and thankful for this whole experience and look forward to walking my dog again over the South Downs. I consider myself very fortunate to have had a wonderful surgeon like Mr Lewis who is so clearly passionate about his work and his patients. Marie-Louise Cartwright. West Sussex, 8 February
I cannot thank Mr Lewis enough for all his surgical brilliance and the post operative care plan he put in place when I recently had a total knee replacement. Over the last few years I had been suffering a great deal of pain and my moblilty was becoming a real issue. Having explored all the ways possible to manage a life of increasing restrictions I reluctantly decided it was time to be radical and go for having a new knee. I began researching surgeons and discovered Mr Lewis. When we met he was welcoming and very enthusiast about his work. He explained clearly the process of the operation and I went away feeling totally confident that I was doing the right thing. I was particularly encouraged to hear about the potential for the operation being pain free. It didn’t somehow seem possible that you could cut out a knee, put in a new one and it could be pain free. However, it was clear I was in safe and extremely capable hands. I underwent the operation at Goring Hospital (Conformis Knee with spinal anaesthetic ) and unbelievably just as I was told I went home pain free the next day using only one stick for security. To be honest I didn't really need the stick after that. The hospital team were very attentive and efficient and I noticed they had very specific and clear guidelines from Mr Lewis as to how to care for his patients. Again I found this reassuring. When I came home from hospital after the operation it was with a meticulously planned programme of self care. Clear directions for medication, exercise, rest and ice therapy were given. I rented the ice machine and this was tremendously helpful (although be prepared you will use 4 bags of ice a day!). I was encouraged to call the ward or email Mr Lewis if I had any concerns and as I had left hospital so quickly this felt very supportive. I am still amazed by the pain free aspect of the operation. It has meant that I can do the all important exercises relatively freely. At home 12 days after the operation I am comfortably mobile and apart from moving freely around the house can go out for short walks and to the shopping centre to look for post operative treats! My leg can feel quite stiff, tight and tingly at times (the norm) especially if I have been particularly active. However it is not overly swollen, the plaster is off and the wound is healing very well. There were no stitches or clips to remove. Thank you again Mr Lewis. In the words of my physiotherapist the recovery is ‘phenomenal’ and that is all down to you. Marie Simon - February 2019
