Mr James Hewes

Mr James Hewes is a highly respected Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon, practising at leading institutions including Spire and Nuffield Health Hospitals in Bristol. As part of his specialist practice, Mr Hewes works closely with Verve Health Group to deliver a comprehensive range of laparoscopic (keyhole) weight-loss procedures. These include Roux-en-Y and Mini gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding. He also has extensive expertise in revisional bariatric surgery, including band adjustment or replacement and conversion to alternative bariatric procedures. Mr Hewes has performed more than 700 major bariatric operations and has played a pivotal role in developing a nationally leading enhanced recovery programme. Patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes are central to his practice, reflected in his excellent safety record which is publicly available through the National Bariatric Surgery Registry’s Surgeon Specific Outcome dataset. Within the NHS, Mr Hewes is based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, a regional tertiary referral centre for bariatric surgery, where he previously served for over a decade as Lead Clinician and Clinical Director for Gastrointestinal Surgery. His wider expertise also includes advanced laparoscopic surgery for gallstone disease and hernias , with a particular focus on day-case and enhanced recovery short-stay procedures.
