Emergency surgery performed July 2019 on obstructed/perforated fistulated mass caused by very long term Crohn's Disease. Predicted duration of surgery 3 hrs, actual duration 8 hrs. Procedures performed : Ileoceacectomy Sigmoid Colectomy End loop Ileostomy End colostomy Adhesolysis I can only recommend this surgeon. After MANY years of avoiding surgery I was in a critical state yet again, and was on my seventh admission in nineteen months. I suffer from very significant anxiety attacks whilst in hospital, repeatedly self discharging and even pulling out cannulae and running off the ward. Iain treated me with great respect and was very open, honest, straight forward about my likely prognosis without immediate surgery in his characteristic relaxed (horizontal) style. Prior to this discussion my preferred option, for which I had planned and amassed appropriate drugs, was to take my own life as the pain I was suffering was getting beyond my ability to control with large dosages of very strong opiates. Iain's truthful assessment of my situation and his respect for my decisions did more to allay my anxiety than any of the other surgeons, physicians, GPs and psychiatrists I had met in the previous 27 years. I think it is extremely likely that had it been any other surgeon that approached me at that moment in time, including the consultant I had been working with for the previous three years, I would have elected not to have had an operation. My operation was very complicated and did not go exactly to plan. Nor did my recovery, which resulted in life threatening sepsis. This operation saved my life, but is unlikely to have cured me. I need at least one, or possibly two, more operations this year, and the likelihood of further operations for the remainder of my life. But for the very first time I have not been afraid of this prospect, and I can categorically say that Mr Iain Hunter is the primary reason for this fact. I hope that my candour can go some small way to easing your mind about any procedure that you may require, and that you can be confident in your choice of Mr Iain Hunter as your surgeon.
