My Cardiologist was concerned that the private hospitals in Cheshire did not have sufficient emergency back up if I had a heart problem during the hip replacement surgery I required. I had heard about Mr Hugh Apthorp from A doctor at HCA Wilmslow. On further investigation it was confirmed that the HCA London Bridge hospital did have the required back up, and I had a consultation with Mr Hugh Apthorp who was most professional, and I was totally reassured that there would be no problems with the hip replacement or my heart. I had the operation carried out in early April at the London Bridge hospital who were excellent in their after care, and I left the hospital after three days with no problems, and my recovery has been exactly as Mr Hugh Apthorp predicted, and after 10 weeks I am 100% restored to normal activity. Mr Hugh Apthorp is truly at the top of his field and the London Bridge are exceptional in their patient care, and I must include Abi Mr Apthorp’s secretary who is an absolute gem, and always there to answer any queries, even when she is trying to get on a tube to go home - A fantastic team!! I had a minimally invasive right hip replacement in November 2021, prior to this I was experiencing a lot of pain, my life had narrowed down due to being unable to walk any distance at all and work was increasingly difficult and painful, plus just getting dressed or washing was very difficult. Mr Apthorp was extremely capable, efficient and kind and I was put at ease straight away, his PA was also very helpful and supportive, answering all my additional queries. I was up almost straight away after surgery and doing stairs the following day. I have been very impressed with the results and nearly two months later am virtually pain free, able to dress and wash easily and feel it is a minor 'miracle'. I am looking forward to the summer at my allotment and walking distances and am already back doing Tai Chi. I feel very lucky to have been recommended to Mr Apthorp.

I was recommended Mr Apthorp by a neighbour. How I appreciate that recommendation as I had a left THR on the 7th Jan 2019 at The Spire in Hastings. For three years prior I had been in increasing levels of pain and getting less and less mobile effecting my life in every way. I was up walking a few yards the same day and left hospital after two nights and then my recovery was extremely fast allowing me back to work within two weeks, admittedly a dest job but very soon walking several miles a day to aid recovery. Just a year on now and I haven’t looked back and sometimes can’t believe how badly I walked with an extreme limp and slowly constantly in pain. Overweight and unable to get the exercise I needed to keep my weight down. Mr Apthorp changed my life on that day. An amazing operation. Thank you Hugh it’s been pain free ever since and I even forget I had it done.

I had a minimally invasive hip replacement 8 years ago. The whole process was very straightforward including issue of and training in the use of crutches PRIOR to surgery and meeting the nursing team who would provide after care both in hospital and at home. Following the operation I was able to remain an Operational Firefighter and enjoy mountaineering again. I have climbed over 100 mountains since my operation including Europe’s highest peak Mount Elbrus in Russia. Incredible considering the constant pain I used to be in which is now just a distant memory.

I had a total minimally-invasive hip replacement in June 2018 performed by Mr. Apthorp. He and his anaesthetist were very kind and attentive, as were the staff at the Lister Hospital. My operation was done in the evening and I was up out of bed by lunchtime the next day. I had almost no pain. It was a bit weird to find that a fairly major operation seemed so easy! I duly took care to follow the post-op guidelines and exercises and would say that I was pretty well back to normal after four months, from which time on, it is impossible to tell that I had a hip replacement. Incidentally, other patients may find it useful, as I did, as soon as possible in the months after the operation to make a point of leading with the operated leg whenever possible, to put a careful load on it, e.g. going up stairs. I found that this helped to get the wasted leg muscles from being very weak, back to full strength.
