I first dislocated my knee in 2004, but was too young for a replacement, so fast forwards to 2022 and during the summer while at work (as a London Fire Fighter) my knee started to swell up and give me a lot of pain. I went to see Mr Atkinson who gave me a series of scans, listened to the whole history of my knee and then we decided that a full replacement was required. He recommended that a custom joint was made for me, which we had done and then I was operated on. After the operation (2 month post op) I was no longer in any pain, other than some muscular from physio, but the pain from my knee has now gone. I am walking better than I have in years, and without realising it I even ran to catch a train. Something i haven't been able to do for some time. In our last meeting Mr Atkinson said he was very pleased with my outcome as when he 'got inside my knee' he found that it was far worse than the scans showed it to be. He has to shave some bone spurs and clean my knee cap as well. I'm glad he is very pleased, because I am over the moon! I could not have wished for a better result! He pre op consultations were very clear, informed, he listened extremely well, and offered advice throughout. When it came to the actual operation he was clear and explained everything that would be happening and did his best to put me at ease in the theatre. Post op, in the hospital he explained what had happened during the operation and how he thought it went. During the next consultation he spoke with me further about what is likely to happen in the future and to 'curb my enthusiasm for running', at least until it has fully healed. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I wish I had seen him 20 years ago when I first damaged my knee, maybe I wouldn't have needed a replacement now.
