Gunaratnam Shyamalan is the best surgeon I have ever come across in my lifetime I fractured my scaphoid bone 20 years ago playing football where it had developed AVN (Avascular Necrosis) causing the bone to die and loose its blood supply. After 20 years of pain/suffering and been seen by many orthopaedic surgeons with no clear answer of fixing the scaphoid itself besides salvage option (wrist fusion) which is a procedure for really serious damage to wrist and can outweigh the benefit of the surgery. After trying many years searching for a solution and contacting surgeons all with a similar answer wrist fusion or live with the pain. I finally decided to live with the pain until my everyday simple tasks were starting to become more painful and wrist was weakening. I decided to go private where an orthopaedic surgeon referred me to Gunaratnam, he advised me he was a specialist in scaphoid fractures as Gunaratnam fractured his scaphoid playing Rugby and that’s where his passion started for research in scaphoid. After seeing Gunaratnam I was so impressed with his friendly attitude and his confidence to fix my wrist he made me feel at ease as if it was not a big issue to fix I even found it too good to be true. However, he explained the procedure which gave me confidence to go ahead with the surgery. The surgery itself wasn’t invasive and was done through key hole surgery without cutting and making scars on my wrist and leaving metal plates in my wrist. Couple of months after you could not tell I had surgery as the cuts were very small. The results of the surgery were also a success with a 20-year-old fracture finally healed. Gunaratnam did explain to me my wrist would not be perfect due to it being a 20 year old fracture which was more than understandable. One year on my wrist has massively improved with very less pain and strength improvement where I am able to do hard work without pain limiting the amount of work I can do. I am ever so grateful that there are surgeons like Gunaratnam that do not shy away from a challenge and are willing to attempt some of the most complex hand issues and surgeries giving back lively hood to many people. I would totally recommend Gunaratnam for a scaphoid fracture as he is an expert in this area and this particular bone, the only thing I regret is I wish I came across him earlier.

After being discharged from hospital after injuring my hand I was still experiencing problems months later and was put under Mr Shyamalan's care. From the start he listened and made me feel at ease. He suspected that I had ruptured a tendon in my finger and was quickly sent for scans which confirmed this. In January this year I had the 1st stage of tendon reconstruction. The 3 hour extensive surgery was carried out under local anaesthetic and throughout Mr Shyamalan ensured that I was comfortable and explained what was happening. In August this year I had the 2nd stage, again under local anaesthetic, where the tendon was removed from my right wrist and reconstructed into the left hand and again experienced nothing but the best care. I have since been discharged by physio therapy and by Mr Shyamalan himself and I am so please to say my hand is as good as new! We were never sure how much my hand and finger would return to normal function, we just knew I wouldn't experience the problems that I did have and I remember saying to him throughout the outpatients appointments that I was happy with how much it had already improved and that would be enough. I am now 4 months post op and haven't seen Mr Shyamalan for about 6 weeks, my hand is now fully functioning as it was before the injury. My finger bends at each joint and I have no pain or discomfort. I am now just working on rebuilding the strength to my left hand. I couldn't thank you Mr Shyamalan enough for what you have done, I am definitely the patient with 100% success after this surgery. The long process was definitely worth every moment. I am so glad that I put all of my trust into you. A surgeon that really knows his stuff and I would recommend to anyone!

I had a trapeziectomy of my left thumb on 21st August this year at Spire Parkway, Solihull as an NHS patient. Mr Shyamalan had previously injected steroids into the joint which had given me pain relief for some months but the pain was getting worse again. The operation went well, my scar is healing, I am doing the exercises and am sure that as time goes by the strength will improve and I will be pain free, all the stages as explained by Mr Shyamalan. Mr Shyamalan is a kind and gentle surgeon, he put me at ease and I trusted him to do his best to help me. I certainly feel he is the best surgeon I was lucky enough to be treated by. Thank you

Excellent experience. No one likes operations of any kind, but Mr Gunaratnam Shyamalan immediately puts you at ease. From step one, the first consultation, followed by the appointment booking for the operation in conjunction with the doctor and his secretary. The personal touch is always appreciated. Mr Shyamalan kept in touch throughout the process, even after having the stitches out he advised me to contact him direct if I had any problems or queeries. Altogether a pleasant experience from start to finish.

Mr Shyamalan operated on my right thumb in February of this year 20019. I had, had terrible pain in the thumb joint for many, many years. I had a basal thumb replacement and I am now on the waiting list to have my left thumb done. After having my right thumb done, I did experience some scar sensitively for a few months but it’s absolutely brilliant now. Looking forward to having my left one done now. Would highly recommend Mr Shyamalan as a hand surgeon. Great aftercare service from himself and his team.
