I first saw Dr McGowan at Gartnavel General Hospital in June 2020 after suffering with a detached retina in my left eye which was getting worse and was causing a lot of worry as I only have sight in that eye and needed glasses for driving because I'm short sighted. The day after he saw me I was in for my operation and to my surprise he said he was thinking of doing my cataract as well as fixing my retina, well he did and I can now see without glasses for the first time in years. My retina is also doing well, after five weeks I am able to go back to work and do other things like drive without the need for glasses something I thought I would never be able to do again. I am so grateful to Dr McGowan for everything he has done, he is very good at what he does and believes in him self and I believed in him, very easy to talk to and honest and understanding. I really couldn't have had a better eye surgeon than Dr McGowan

Mr McGowan diagnosed me with a retinal detachment on 27 May 2020. I was devastated and very anxious as although I have had eye problems since birth and have had squint and cataract surgeries, as well as subsequent Yag laser, I had never received bad news about my eyes as such. Mr McGowan talked through the options with me fully explaining everything clearly. I found his confidence to be very reassuring and calming and I was so appreciative of his patience and kind manner that day. He answered all my questions and then answered them again to give extra reassurance about the procedure and expected outcome. I was booked in for vitrectomy surgery the following day. He then talked through the surgery both pre and post operatively with me again in his relaxed, calming and caring manner; this kind of patient care is so very important especially for anxious people like me who need to be well informed. I am now four weeks post surgery and the operation has been successful and for this I am very thankful to him. Because of my cumulative eye history now, there is a 1 in 10 lifetime risk that that a retinal detachment will occur in my other eye. I hope and pray that this never happens but if it does, I have faith and confidence that Mr McGowan would have the best skills to fix it. All told, I consider myself to be extremely fortunate and actually very blessed to have found and been treated by someone of Mr McGowan's calibre and talent, especially in the middle of a pandemic, when accessing services and specialists is so difficult. I cannot recommend him highly enough and hope that many others continue to benefit from his intercession, care and healing.

I have found Mr McGowan to be very understanding and courteous. I had cataract surgery and the cataract was very dense so I was very worried about it as I could not see anything at all. Mr McGowan put me totally at ease during the consultation period and during surgery. I cannot believe the difference in my eyesight, it's given me a new lease of life!

I was told that i was going to lose my eye sight. This was after i had eye surgery at the golden jubilee hospital. After four days i was sent to the opticians who sent me back there. Then i was sent to Hairmyers who operated as soon as i arrived.i was then moved to Gartnaval where doctor McGowan operated. After the operation he explained to me how aggressive it had become. On examination one of his colleges had look and said if you throw a bunch of monkeys a piano they shall perform an orchestra.I would like to take this oppertunity to thank you Dr McGowan. your sincerely Ann Whyte

I was first seen by Dr McGowan in July 2018 when I was diagnosed with macular oedema in my left eye. In September 2018 he carried out a complex procedure which included corrective surgery to a previously mended retinal tear, retinal peel, removal of the oedema and replacement of the lens. Since then he has removed a cyst on the left eyelid and repaired three further retinal tears in my right eye. I now have the all clear with the proviso that because of the damage to the retina in my right eye I could possibly develop macular oedema in that eye. I hope I don"t but if it does happen I will do everything in my power to ensure that I am seen again by Dr McGowan and treated by him. I have complete faith in his abilities as a surgeon but he is also has a sense of humour and a great manner.
