Mr Gerard McGowan

From the outset my treatment by Dr McGowan has been absolutely amazing. Everything about my treatment was explained perfectly. The two procedures were carried out two weeks apart and went without any hitches. I have to say this has,undoubtedly, been a life changing experience. The ancillary staff and the nursing associates at the hospital were kind, considerate and also very helpful either their explanations of all the tests I went through. I can’t fault anyone. I had my after surgery assessment today am I am delighted to have perfect vision. I simply can’t recommend Dr McGowan and the team at Ross Hall highly enough.

Dr McGowan performed cataract removal on my right eye - I was quite anxious as my left eye is a lazy eye with no real sight out of it so I was concerned about a procedure on my “good eye”. Absolutely no need to be worried at all - Dr McGowan was amazing, reassuring, confident and I can now see after 49 years of wearing corrective glasses / contacts - I cannot thank Dr McGowan enough and would recommend him to anyone for this type of surgery.

Developed a macular hole that was unable to be treated by the NHS where I live (Northern Ireland). Searched for a private ophthalmic surgeon and found Dr McGowan at BMI Ross Hall, Glasgow. Was immediately impressed by his online presence, and meeting him confirmed those initial impressions. Very courteous; really felt he listened to my concerns; told me the worst that could happen as well as what he expected would happen; was very aware of the distances I had to travel to see him and arranged appointments accordingly. I had the surgery the week after my initial consultation, and again he was very caring and considerate - even if he did draw a big fat green arrow over my eye! Following the operation he came to see me again to explain what he had done and the follow up I would require. I have just had my follow up appointment and again he was so friendly and caring. I am delighted by the results and can actually read better now with the operated eye than I could before the hole developed! I thoroughly recommend him (other than his propensity to wear red socks with orange theatre clogs!!!); his great sense of humour and how much he cares. Would not hesitate to go back to him with any further eye problems.

I saw Dr McGowan recently and was diagnosed with a detached retina in my right eye. I had been worried I would lose the sight in my eye more so as I drive for a living. Dr McGowan confirmed that my eye was in a particularly bad condition but he was confident that he could repair it and the following week I had the Cryo Buckle procedure. I am now 5 weeks post op and the results are far better than I expected. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr McGowan, he is professional, friendly, reassuring and most importantly an excellent surgeon. Top Chap!

I had a cataract operation on my left eye on 8th February 2020. This operation was done by a private company called Medinet. The operation was not a success and my optician phoned Gartnavel with details of the complications. I was referred to Dr Gerald McGowan who immediately picked up on the problem. He also consulted with other colleagues to ascertain the best way forward to correct the error made by the Medinet surgeon and took time to explain to me what the procedure would be. Dr McGowan performed the repair operation on 28th March 2020. The operation was a success and my sight was restored. I was so relieved and so grateful. He was so kind, again explaining everything to me and trying to allay my fears that things could go wrong again. He assured me that this would not happen and it didn't. I had so much confidence in him that I asked him to do the cataract operation on my right eye advising him that I was willing to wait for him to do the operation. He said he would and I was so relieved knowing I was in safe hands. The operation went ahead on 12th January 2021 and the wait was well worth it. Dr McGowan was in the theatre and a member of his staff carried out the procedure. She was excellent too as were all the staff. The operation was a great success with absolutely no post problems and I cannot believe the difference in my sight. If I had a choice 5 stars is just not enough for Dr McGowan as he is worth so much more than this. An excellent surgeon with a kind and caring manner who inspired confidence in me when I was so scared and upset by the error made by Medinet. I cannot thank him enough. 10 stars maybe a more suitable option.

I am so grateful to have been under the care of Dr McGowan at Ross Hall for cataract surgery on both eyes. Mine was no straightforward case, with a complex prescription, extreme myopia (-25 and -20), longer than average axial length, as well as previous retinal detachment. I really appreciated Dr McGowan’s direct and ‘no-nonsense’ approach, he answered all my questions and concerns honestly and frankly, both pre and post surgeries. It’s clear he is excellent at what he does and this surgery is life-changing for me after 30 years of daily contact lens wear, and I’m only early 40s!. God forbid I should require eye surgery again in the future, but I would not hesitate to reach out to Dr McGowan, or to recommend him to others.

Well where do I start with the lovely Mr McGowan. Totally professional from my initial consultation to the end of my surgery. Put me at ease and answered all my worrying questions. Such a gent.

Mr McGowan was my consultant for retinal eye surgery, and his level of care both pre and post surgery was excellent. He explained the procedure clearly, ensuring I understood and was happy. Thanks to Mr McGowan I am no longer considered registered blind in my left eye, and have nothing but high praise for him. Thank you!

Dr McGowan is an excellent doctor. I first consulted him in March in respect of an Epiretinal Membrane, and an operation was scheduled for 19th March. Unfortunately that coincided with lockdown and the procedure had to be cancelled. When the first lockdown eased on 18th June the operation was rescheduled for 24th June, and with some trepidation re Covid I went ahead. I need not have been concerned. Everything in Ross Hall was handled very well indeed and Dr McGowan was completely reassuring throughout. Everything was explained in detail and questions answered with great patience. Three months on I am completely satisfied with the outcome and can highly recommend Dr McGowan.

I first saw Dr McGowan at Gartnavel General Hospital in June 2020 after suffering with a detached retina in my left eye which was getting worse and was causing a lot of worry as I only have sight in that eye and needed glasses for driving because I'm short sighted. The day after he saw me I was in for my operation and to my surprise he said he was thinking of doing my cataract as well as fixing my retina, well he did and I can now see without glasses for the first time in years. My retina is also doing well, after five weeks I am able to go back to work and do other things like drive without the need for glasses something I thought I would never be able to do again. I am so grateful to Dr McGowan for everything he has done, he is very good at what he does and believes in him self and I believed in him, very easy to talk to and honest and understanding. I really couldn't have had a better eye surgeon than Dr McGowan
