I wanted to write a review for those who may be thinking of undergoing surgery and want to know what it's like. I first met Dr Davies over two years ago now, he is such a lovely man, very warm and understanding. I waited 1 year and one day for my first surgery after having my first scheduled date cancelled. The surgery went 'well' or so I was told, I woke up in the worst pain and was given hardly any pain relief, to make matters worse I had no movement or feeling in my right arm. I was moved to the icu once the feeling in my arm came back, from there I still didn't recieve pain relief, it wasn't until my mother rang (once I had spoken to her) that the pain team came and assessed me and gave me a drip of morphine and ketamine. The whole stay at Southampton general hospital was awful and I couldn't wait to leave. After three months and following Dr Davies instructions of recovery I went for a follow up where I was told the pain I was still getting was infact from loose bolts in the bottom of my spine. The pain I had to live with for those three months and the following 5 months was excruciating, I cried myself to sleep nearly every night I couldn't sit, lay or stand without being in pain. I had my second surgery to remove the bolts at the bottom of my spine in the spire hospital Southampton. The second experience was no better than the first, I went down last for theatre as no one looked at my pre assessment notes to realise I have a latex allergy, however I finally went down and couldn't wait to get it done and be pain free. I came round from the surgery and was told all went well, the worrying part was that the anesthetist told me he had given me penicillin when on my records it states I'm allergic to penicillin, luckily I didn't have a reaction to it but it was the fact I could have and become seriously ill. In August of this year I was discharged from Dr Davies however I am still in excruciating pain and really wish someone had told me how it really was going to be before I went ahead with it. I'm not saying everyone's experience is going to be the same as mine however, please take into consideration I have spoken to others who have had the same surgery since and they have had similar experiences and are still in pain. If I knew what I knew now I would have never undergone the first surgery. I find every day tasks like work, sitting and sleeping extremely difficult due to the pain, I am in and have not been offered any physio therapy or hydrotherapy so I just have to live with it. I have now been referred back to Dr Davies through my GP because of the pain and I am hopeful that this time I can get the help I need for this pain to go away or atleast ease. Dr Davies is a really lovely man like I said earlier and it is no fault of his that neither surgery has worked but I want people to know that not all surgery that he performs will go to plan and fix you like you hope he would. He is a surgeon and not a miracle worker so don't always expect the perfect outcome.
