I have to say that Ed Dawe’s care, expertise and ability to explain things simply is second to none. I ruptured my Achilles in September 2020 and had a referral to Dr Dawe whereby he conducted a full bespoke consultation in line with my situation and needs. We looked at the options both surgical and non-surgical and settled on a surgical route. He was extremely knowledgeable and reassuring around the potential risks and benefits displaying complete confidence that he would get me back to the energetic lifestyle I was used to. The operation went well and as part of my rehabilitation I was in a surgical boot for around 4 months under the supervision of Dr Dawe and one of the physios he works closely with. An Achilles rupture is not for the faint hearted and in some quarters it’s noted as being worse than a leg break. In terms of pain, I must say that it was most pronounced when beginning the physio after coming out of the boot, where I just needed to push through the barrier in order to move forward. Pushing yourself through physio is the most important for a full recovery as relying on the sessions alone won’t guarantee it. The exercises you’re given in between are crucial. In terms is recovery I only went back to playing football recently (March 2023) which was the cause of the rupture. This was only because of life getting in the way and myself being fairly cautious with it. I think that I could have gone back after about a year and a half (from surgery which was in October 2020) rather than leaving it for around 2 and a half years (best to make sure! Lol). All in all I can’t recommend Ed enough, an expert in his profession and a really nice guy with it! I hope this helps anyone who is going through a similar thing to myself or is researching a consultant re surgery, rehabilitation, etc.

I had an ankle arthroscopy at the end of September 2022 after years and years of pain and instability. Mr Dawe was confident and able to advise on the procedure and what to expect from it. I was lucky as it was only one week between the consultation and actual operation. All went smoothly and my ankle is as good as new. I should not have waited those many years. The team at Goring Hall was also amazing. Thank you all very much!

I had ankle joint replacement surgery by Mr Dawe six months ago. The treatment I received from the first consultation through to post surgery follow up was extremely good.I found Mr Dawe to be very approachable and happy to explain any queries regarding both the surgical procedure and subsequent recovery time frame.

I had a Right hallux MTPJ fusion on the 27th of September with Mr Dawe, I was a little apprehensive as I had two toes staightened a few years back and the surgeon and the treatment was not good. What a joy from the first meeting Mr Dawe put me completely at ease, and took me through the procedure step by step. I had hardly any pain and the scar is no longer visable. This is a consultant who knows what he is doing, and is so nice with it. I have recomended him to two people and I am sure there will be more. How I wish all consultants were able to be so charming and efficient, but it is very rare.

I had bunion surgery on both my feet (not at once - my choice). Mr Dawe was very caring and considerate. I had previously had a bad experience of NHS care at a local hospital for another matter and decided to travel to get the best possible care and outcome that I could and I couldn’t have had a better surgeon. Mr Dawe listened to all of my concerns and put me totally at ease. He also has a great sense of humour which is a bonus. The surgery was very successful and the scarring is barely visible. I was amazed that I was almost pain free taking just paracetamol for 2 days only after the operation on both occasions. I have recommended him to my sister and sing his praises to everyone.

Profile

Mr Dawe is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialising in disorders of the foot and ankle.

He treats orthopaedic trauma, as well as a wide variety of foot and ankle pathologies such as bunions, lesser toe problems, arthritis, flat or high-arched feet, foot complications of diabetes and complex revision surgery of all types.

Mr Dawe uses numerous techniques to help with foot and ankle problems and is often able to avoid surgery. Where surgery is needed, arthroscopic or ‘keyhole’ techniques or minimally invasive surgery can often be used to improve the experience and recovery time after surgery.

Mr Dawe completed his training in South West London, during which he worked for numerous different foot and ankle surgeons in London, Sussex and Surrey.

He broadened his experience with limb reconstruction and complex trauma fellowship at St George's Hospital with Alex Trompeter and, following this, a second year-long fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital with Heath Taylor.

Mr Dawe was awarded the BOFAS visiting fellowship in 2014, travelling to the Schonklinik in Munich in order to work with Prof Markus Walther, president of the German foot and ankle society. He also travelled to Regions Trauma Centre in Minneapolis to visit the renowned trauma specialist professor Peter Cole.

Mr Dawe works as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in West Sussex.
