Donald Ainscow gave me my life back.. 40 years ago I suffered a broken neck C/4 He performed an anterior cervical fusion after 3 long years of my life deteriorating. I had undiagnosed osteoarthritis and had been diagnosed with a torn muscle after an accident with a wheelbarrow. Donald Ainscow is and will always be my hero..not only is he a first class surgeon, he is one of the most caring and humble men I have ever met. Mine was a long and complicated journey, with several bumps along the way..not least a P.E post-op day 7. We had tried physio and traction to no avail, the procedure was not undertaken lightly ( especially in the 1980's) with the survival rate not being very high. Donald was open and frank with me from the outset. He fully explained the risks and the percentage of my recovery. He offered a 2nd and 3rd opinion before I made my decision. There was no need...I readily put my life in the hands of this incredible man. Here I am aged 73 with my cervical fusion that had an expected life of 8-10 years. Several years later my eldest son had a orthopedic problem...straight to see Mr.A who ( of course) sorted him out perfectly. I am honoured to have been a patient and a friend of this great man.
