Having had emergency treatment by the NHS to relieve a severely inflamed gall bladder containing an enormous 7cm gallstone, I was placed on their waiting list for surgery to remove the stone and the gall bladder altogether. Almost 3 months later, and with a bile drain still in place, my position on the NHS waiting list seemed as uncertain as ever, so I resolved to seek the opinion of a private practitioner. I received a strong recommendation to see Mr. Dipankar Mukherjee. As soon as he assessed the case, Dip Mukherjee identified my condition as being extremely critical, and booked me in for surgery just 4 days later. He warned me that the process was likely to be far from the normal day-case, as so much time had passed since the original emergency treatment, and deterioration of the site was predicted. This was indeed the case, as the surgery took almost 3 times as long as normal due to very poor condition of the gall bladder and adhesions around the drain track. Fortunately, the skill of this gentleman and his team meant that no injury was caused during the surgery, and despite the complexity of the procedure, it was accomplished without the need to convert to open surgery. Not surprisingly given the previous delays, a number of post-operative complications arose, so my overall stay as an in-patient came to 12 nights, spread between Nuffield Brentwood and Harley Street at Queen's. I received the most excellent care at both locations. Throughout my time under Dip Mukherjee’s care, he listened very carefully to my concerns, and explained the treatment and recovery processes in very clear terms, as well as managing my expectations extremely well. I felt that he treated me as a peer, and almost as a friend. He is very approachable and has a pleasant demeanour. During my time as an in-patient, he visited me every single day bar one, despite running clinics and surgery at 4 different locations. For anyone seeking attention in the field of Upper Gastro, I would strongly recommend this consummate professional.

Thank you so much. Reflux is often underestimated by doctors as to the havoc it may cause to patients life. I am glad to see that you are feeling better. Regards to you and your family.

In May 2014 I had a blockage in the bowel and was admitted to Queens Hospital as an emergency case. Mr Mukherjee was my surgeon and performed an operation to remove a cancerous tumour from my bowel and fit a Stoma Bag. He was very thorough and explained the situation to me fully prior to the operation. Unfortunately my condition was a lot more serious than I thought with the bowel almost at bursting point. However, although I was unconscious or sedated for 5 days due to other complications Mr Mukherjee had successfully removed the tumour. I am 3 years down the line now and after Chemo Therapy can now lead a near normal life. I will forever be grateful to Mr Mukherjee and his team together with the Intensive Care Unit for their professionalism, care and support they gave me. I am absolutely certain they saved my life and I cannot praise them enough. Eddie Haley

In May 2016 I was admitted to Queen's hospital in Romford Essex for a laparoscopic repair of a giant para oesophageal hiatus hernia, an operation carried out by the surgeon Mr D. Mukherjee. Up until the time of the operation I was experiencing difficulties with breathing due to the constriction in my chest and was unable to walk more than a few yards without stopping to catch my breath. I had problems with swallowing food and drink. I slept propped upright at night due to severe acid reflux and had a continuous burning in my nose and throat due to reflux as well as a constant taste in my mouth of vomit - all very distressing symptoms. When I saw Mr Mukherjee initially to discuss my troubling symptoms I was very anxious but I was very quickly put at ease by Mr Mukherjee's careful explanation of what the problem was and what could be done to restore my health. He is an excellent 'people-person' with the ability to make his patient feel involved in the process of understanding what has been happening and what needs to be done without increasing patient anxiety. I came away from the consultation feeling positive and hopeful and much less anxious. The care that I recieved at Queens Hospital during and after the operation was magnificent. The Day staff on the ward (Ocean A) were excellent, hard working, attentive, supportive. My only reservation was with the night staff who, when I reported an unusual and disturbing heart rate told me to keep calm and go back to sleep. This was checked on the following day and found to be atrial fibrillation. Mr Mukherjee and members of his team were in constant attendance until I was discharged at the end of four days. Mr Mukherjee also arranged for immediate follow-up appointments for the first month of my recovery. Since the operation I have been able to walk good distances with no problems at all as well as to swim, sleep flat and eat a healthy diet. I cannot praise Mr Mukherjee highly enough as well as the care received from the nursing staff. My thanks and good wishes go to him, his team and the nursing staff that have brought me back to a healthy life. Maureen Mckenzie.
