Had phone appointment with Dr Tariah in August 2021. When I told this psychiatrist I wanted to stop the 'antidepressant' drug Seroxat (paroxetine) after 20 years so I could start a family, he sniggered at me and said "You do know it isn't a contraceptive, don't you?". This was incredibly insulting – I have taken this drug for two decades, and have been sexually active in that time (though not able to orgasm due to this drug), so I have an intimate knowledge of this medication – and I also well informed about a woman's reproductive system. He was patronising me, with a total lack of sensitivity around the extreme difficulties I have had due to this drug – difficulties of which, that are likely to prevent me from ever becoming a mum. This hurts. Over many years, I've encountered at least six Northampton NHS psychiatrists in relation to antidepressant withdrawal. Only one of those six has been sincerely sympathetic and a proper listener. The rest, like Dr Tariah, were unacceptably ignorant about SSRI withdrawal, and were defensive and arrogant about that, with a clear lack of empathy and basic ability to listen and take a patient's concerns seriously. There are no excuses for this treatment. It's time psychiatry stopped pretending its drugs are harmless. It's time psychiatry started recognising the harm that its drugs can cause. It's time psychiatry started treating those harmed with the same respect as those who benefit from psychiatry's drugs. And it's time psychiatry started really helping people who want to exercise their right to stop taking medication. NB. This review form forces me to add a location of the appointment. I have chosen Campbell House, but the appointment with Dr Tariah was actually over the phone.
