Presenting for my first appointment with Mr Lui, I was in profound pain that the combined efforts of prescribed opioids, tramadol and codeine couldn’t control. Multiple visits to A&E and my GP had failed to pinpoint the cause. Darren Lui listened to me and sent me for a comprehensive set of diagnostic tests, including specialised imaging using nuclear medicine. He reviewed the reports with me and even used anatomical models to show me what the more obscure medical terms meant. He discussed treatment options and risks thoroughly and gave me evidence-based reasons for his proposed treatment path. Consenting to have a surgical procedure on my spine was still frightening, but everything was clearly explained. Darren Lui is a highly-skilled spinal surgeon; I was in good hands. The procedure was successful. Within days my pain became manageable, my mobility began to improve and hope returned. Within weeks, I was off prescription painkillers and well enough to return to work. Before discharging me, Darren Lui recommended key lifestyle changes that would rebuild strength and avert recurrence. He also referred me to an excellent physiotherapist to support that process. In my experience, Darren Lui is superb. A year later, I still feel grateful every day, because he fixed an acute and highly debilitating back problem for me. His skills and advice restored my mobility and allowed me to resume normal life. He was also personable and funny. Highly recommended.
