Mr Simillis saw me at West Middlesex Hospital following an emergency admission. On arrival I met with his oncology team, and in a timely fashion, numerous tests were carried out. These very quickly confirmed my unexpected diagnosis of colon cancer, which had come as a shock to my family and I as we have no history in the family and none of the typical risk factors. During this confusing and worrying time, Mr Simillis had directed his oncology team to answer any questions or concerns. He explained the surgery to us very clearly, including potential risks and post-op care required. The procedure was a laparotomy extended right hemicolcetomy with ileotransverse anastomosis and I was booked to have emergency surgery the following afternoon. Following the surgery, Mr Simillis called my wife and kindly allowed my family to visit me outside of visiting hours and whilst I was in recovery, which was appreciated as they were understandably very worried and nervous. Not only is Mr Simillis incredibly skilled, professional and empathetic, but very direct and fantastic at explaining surgical procedures including potential risks and complications. Thankfully all went well and after 2 weeks in hospital I am recovering well at home. A special thank you also goes to Sarah on the oncology team who spent a few hours with my family and I explaining every part of pre and post op surgery and care and answered every question and concern we had. She was very empathetic and reassuring at this difficult time. I have had my post surgery outpatient appointments with Mr Simillis and his team, and have been given the great news that my bowel cancer was fully excised and no residual cancer remains. Dr Simillis is truly a credit to the NHS and I hope that future patients going through similar situations, get to experience the wonderful demeanour, professionalism and surgical work from him. No doubt, he saved my life and I will not forget him. Heartfelt thanks to Mr Simillis and his team.
