I had a chronic hoarse voice without any sore throat and so was given an urgent referral by my GP in July '17 to the UCLH Macmillan Cancer Centre Head and Neck Unit where I saw Mr Al Yaghchi who examined my larynx with a nasally-introduced laryngoscope. He reassured me that the lump he could see on my vocal cord was most likely benign due to its shape and smoothness and went on to explain that the next step would be to have a neck CT with contrast and then a biopsy in order to identify the lump in detail (granuloma / polyp/ papilloma etc). He also explained that, depending on the detailed findings from the CT and the biopsy, it might also be possible and appropriate to excise the lump at the same time. He was very informative and helpful and answered all my questions carefully and completely. I returned home earlier today from UCLH where Mr Al Yaghchi operated on me earlier this morning. The procedure seems to have been very successful. Mr Al Yaghchi discussed everything in detail beforehand and then he and Professor Vaz, the consultant in charge, visited me afterwards to explain that they had been able to excise entirely what turned out to be a large granuloma because it was attached to my vocal cord with only a fairly narrow bridge of tissue so that its excision by laser would leave only a small wound/scarring and so have a minimal effect on my voice in future. They also injected corticosteroids into the small remaining 'root' of the granuloma to promote its reduction in size by reducing local inflammation. Overall I was extremely happy with the care provided by Mr Al Yaghchi and I can offer no negative comments.
