Mr Hickey communicated extremely well with me both before and after the procedure to 'wash out' a serious and threatening infection from my foot. He explained what was involved very thoroughly, and I found his approach very reassuring. Three weeks later, there are virtually no signs that I have had surgery on my foot. He did a wonderful job, and I am making a good recovery.

Could not have received better care if I had paid for private care. Mr Hickey was very thoughtful, explaining each stage of the procedure, the positive and the possible complications. He was 100% professional throughout.

From start to finish my treatment was first class. I first saw Mr Laing for my initial appointments. He was sensitive to my mobility problems due the arthritis in my foot. He advised me on footwear to use and also arranged for me to have a boot from the hospital to also help with the pain. When Mr Hickey joined his team I was passed to him to do the operation. He explained everything to me regarding my operation. What he was going to do etc. Staff in Orthopaedic &Trauma were also really nice and friendly and never rushed when changing my dressing even though it was obvious they were busy. Even when I had occasions to phone the department for advice, they were very patient and caring. A big thank you to Mr Hickey and his team for giving me back my life.

I cannot recommend Mr. Hickey enough. He fused my ankle which had become mis-shaped and had given me sever discomfort over several years. . At the initial consultation he thoroughly examined my ankle, listened to my history and what I wanted to physically achieve in the future. He explained the options, most of which I had been through in the previous years. As surgery was the remaining option he explained the procedure and the potential side effects of both the surgery and the aesthetic. Immediately before the operation he again explained what he intended to do including the possible need to extend my achilles tendon. He visited me the afternoon after the operation and explained what he had done and the recovery expected (the achilles did not require any work). I suffered no pain after the operation in spite of having 4 screws and peg which ran through my heal and into my tibia. I was in hospital for one night and then discharged with crutches, non-weight bearing for two weeks at which point I had my plaster changed. The plaster was changed again 6 weeks later, again non-weight bearing during this time. I was then in a support knee length boot for 7 weeks partial weight bearing but gradually taking more weight. I was full weight bearing by the end of the 7 weeks. Since the operation he has seen me on three occasions and after 15 weeks I have been discharged. During this time I had no pain. I consider the treatment I received from him and his team to be excellent. I am now back to doing what I did before - looking after horses and sheep. I am related to several medics and they have all been impressed with my recovery. Mr Ben Hickey is a very clever, competent surgeon who gives the very best service and always with a smile. Thankfully, I am not expecting a return visit.
