In 2008 I had an operation performed by Mr White on a cyst found on the lower spine. 9 years later at a follow up consultation Mr White suggested an aspiration of the cyst, which I agreed to. Now in 2022 because of discomfort Mr White examined an Up-to-date MRI Scan to see if the cyst had spread, fortunately it had not. We discussed the results and I decided to decline a further operation which Mr White was prepared to perform. Agreement was reached to contact him if the pain deteriorated, thus warranting further surgery. Mr White discussed with me in great detail and at great length the advantages and dangers at all the various stages of my treatment listed above. Busy or not he always found time to see me and offer advice. I suppose what I'm trying to say is he steered me through harrowing times and continues to do so, with excellent professional advice coupled with a caring attitude and an optimistic approach From JOHN PANNELL, SPALDING, LINCS

I only met Mr Barrie White after my surgery because of timings and the nature of the speed of the op, but he has basically saved my life. To be honest the entire neuro-surgical team at NUH are fantastic, they are a brilliant and reassuring team. Mr White came to visit me on the ward the next day, gave me full de-brief of the op and told me what to expoect in the future. I have been sent a follow -up appt already in his clinic and he very quickly referred me to neuro-oncology for my next step of treatment.

I met Mr White 7 years ago and the care and professionalism from himself and his team is outstanding. Without his care, I'm not sure I would be writing this 7 years. And still to this day, the care I am receiving is amazing and faultless. Thank you

Mr White and his teams were fantastic all the pre op team all the nurses doctors I had 2 operations with Barrie White I was amazed that all these people came together to reassure and make my time in hospital a good positive experience absolutely professional, complety caring and now complety recovering i have nothing but praise for everyone connected with Barrie teams. I would not pretend I wasn't a little apprehensive but the people in neurosurgery teams whether in the theatre or the wards were wonderful. He contacted my wife after the operations and reassured her which in turn reassured my family. Thank you

Thank you for the letter dictated 6/6/2022 and typed 22/6/22. This letter was received on 4/7/22. There seems to be a bit of deception occuring regarding my discharge, post-op progress and the actual events at B11 Ward and the initial 2 day stay in ICU. Firstly, After surgery I came around in ICU and was denied a CPAP machine to help me in getting to sleep, which resulted in my monitor Alarm going of everytime I managed to nod off and then waking me up. The response to this annoyance was for a male Nurse to switch off my monitor. I was fully aware of what was being said around me and distinctly remember hearing staff say they were fed up with dealing with Apnoea cases. You visited me on my second day in ICU and made it clear I was to be sent to the Neuro Ward because they understood best how to deal with my situation. My Nurse at that time 'Charlotte' took note of what you had said and informed the Nurse opposite of what had been decided. Just before Charlotte finished her shift at 1pm a Doctor showed up who was later identified as the Consultant for ICU, he tried to override your decision and started try and force me out of ICU into any old Ward. You had only been gone 25 minutes and Charlotte had only just left. The Nurse opposite who was informed of my situation decided to throw me under the bus, so to speak. At that point I demanded to speak to you but was denied this, 2 porters then arrived but I refused to go as I had visions of being dumped in some corridor somewhere. Question? Is this usual QMC policy, how many other people have they done this to. They kept on insisting I go to General Ward so I tried to get off my bed and get dressed, obviously this was very painful and stressful, they were told that at the minimum you had requested I go to a Spinal Ward B10 I believe. Eventually I was taken to B11, the level of privacy on this Ward obviously did not apply to me, my neighbour was allowed to keep his curtains closed for the entire duration of my stay, most of us didn't get this privilege, maybe it was to do with his constant masturbating, which I eventually complained about on my 2nd night of having to listen to it. Secondly, After your visit on the 4th where you said I should not rush things as I had had a serious Operation, it seems you failed to notify the incumbent Staff if this notion, because no sooner had you left ie, 10 minutes, the Ward Consultant rocked up and said I could leave the next day???? I find this shocking! Were you actually aware that I had only just managed to sit up, stand up and shuflle 10ft. Even a two year old would have known I was in no fit state to be discharged. Your inability to communicate with subordinates caused me intense pain and stress, not to mention the discomfort pf having a Catheter and Drains still attached to my body even though I did not need them, the Drain in my right side cause me to suffer a burn/ blister due to it being in too long. Therefore as it was obvious the Staff were trying to force me to leave prematurely I took steps to get dressed and go, even though I kneww I was in no way ready. Even then the Nurse lied that he had told me I would be in the Ward till the 10th, its frustrating when Nurses are being told one thing and then a Doctor who is only concerned with turning over bed laundry overrides that decision. It is plainly obvious to me that the NHS is not run with the Patients care in mind. Maybe all Consultants should ask the Porters to decide how long Patients can stay? It would be no different to how it is now. Thirdly, you say in your letter I was informed several times to look after my cervical posture??? I only recall this once, in D11. You say I was gradually re-mobilised??? Please can you tell me who did this and when??? The physio only arrived after I had managed to get up and eventually stand up with help from my Nurse. And I'm telling you right here and now " I was in no way well enough for discharge on the 4/ 6 /22" I'm trying to think what your motive would be for saying this?? Or is it that the subordinates didn't tell you till after the fact. How utterly shameful! I dont know who to feel more sorry about 'You or the wretched Patients who come after me" As a matter of record QMC and Yourself have had no input or any other dealings with my recovery or convalescence. You and QMC basically forced me to leave Primary Care well before I was able, only with good fortune and an immense ammount of Pain did I manage to return home, my good friend picked me up at Wellingborough Station and could see how distressed I was, with their help I have managed to get in some aort of shape. You say in your letter, He lives a distance from QMC? 75 miles to be precise, and at my request???? You have organised my preparation closer to home??? By this I think you are referring to MRI Scans abd phone PreOp chats. Having Scans performed closer to my Home rather than having a 150 mile round trip would be a no brainer decision "Surely"! Is the NHS that bureaucratic that it cannot see things as simple as this??? Maybe it is time for the NHS to be Audited and a time and motion study brought into effect, time waisting and expenses should be scrutinised more thoroughly. Lastly, it has taken 5 weeks of recovery to finally see swelling and bruising recede, but the return of Nerve pain to Right Arm and hand is still prevalent. Also you have not included my discharge summary as indicated in your letter. Please read this letter and accept my gratirude for whst ypu have done regarding my Operation. What happened afterwards is another matter. Robert
