At the age of 49 in mid October 1996 I suffered a burst aneurysm in my brain and was violently sick without a stop. I said to my wife if it's dying that is going to stop this then that is the way it's going. The GP who came said it was a migraine and for 9 weeks I suffered a stiff neck and a bad headache and was off work feeling really ill. Then in December I was taken into the Leicester Royal Infirmary and given tests that showed my brain aneurysm and was told by a very smartly dressed doctor from Nottingham QMC I needed brain surgery. I met Barrie White who carefully explained what I needed and what he was going to do. Fearless I agreed to it being so reassured by his manner. When he got into my op he discovered two other aneurysms that needed repair and 3 others which were too small to deal with. He clipped both the new ones and the one that had burst in what I was to learn was a bilateral sub arachnoid repair. I went into intensive care for the next 10 days loitering on the edge of life. My wife tells me that Barrie came to see me daily, even on Christmas Day! He was so dedicated and supportive to me and my wife and family to whom he explained carefully the journey I was on and how it would likely take 2 years to recover as good as I would get and then I would age relatively normally. Thanks to his guidance I have enjoyed a wonderful life, reaching the grand old age of nearly 77. I treasure the time I met this wonderful man. I learned to cut glass and make Tyfany style lampshades and some 9 months after my op surprised him with a lampshade and will never forget the hugs he gave me and my wife. His amazing skills saved my life and guiding me with such sound advice on my voyage of recovery.

Mr White has been caring for me for several years. I truly believe that his skill and care along with the rest of his team have prevented me from being more disabled by my condition. He is always willing to listen to any concerns I have and I feel he has faith in my instincts. This is so reassuring when I am concerned that my condition may have worsened. I am able to contact him at any time which with the nature of my condition is so reassuring. His ability to always understand my concerns and to make me feel involved and in control of any plans for future treatment is invaluable in my ability to deal with the health issues I have. His skill as a surgeon has undoubtedly enabled me to maintain my independence to date. He is always honest about the future and how my condition might deteriorate which helps me come to terms with the prospect of future deterioration but his unfailing optimism and unwavering kindness are constant and totally reassuring. I feel very lucky to have him as my doctor and I could not rate his skill and compassion highly enough.

When I saw Mr White for my pre-op appointment he explained the risks involved with the operation but was also very reassuring as to the outcome. On the day of the operation, 6th Dec, I felt extremely calm as I had complete confidence in Mr White, I am now recovering with the help of my family and listening to my body as advised. I have been extremely happy with the consultation and care received at Queens Med I would also like to mention Lauren , Mr White's secretary, who was always very informative when I spoke to her. '

I first met Mr White during May 1996 (27 years ago) when I attended a consultation with him to dicuss problems I had with lack of feeling in my arms and legs. An MRI scan of my cerebral spine showed a tumour (epyndamoma) which extended from C1 to C7 and it was obvious to see that the tumour was compressing the spinal cord. Mr White explained the severity of the condition and the limited options that I had. I decided that surgery to remove the tumour was my best option. Mr White came to see me on the eve of the operation and reassured me that he and his team would do their upmost to achieve the best possible outcome. On September 16 1996 the operation to remove the tumour from the centre of my spinal cord took place and took 9 hours to complete. Due to the skill of Mr White and his team the best possible outcome was achieved. I had full movement in all my limbs and apart from some postoperative pain and some further loss, czcchxc of feeling in my hands I was back to nearly normal., The postoperative care by everyone involved at QMC was second to none I was allowed to return home to recuperate at home after only one week. Prior to the operation I informed my employers of my surgery and they decided to make me redundant. I needed a job, so, three weeks after my operation I began studying for a degree in Compter Science. Since 1999 I have obtained a 1st class honours degree, a PGCE and a full time lecturing post at a local collage. I retired in 2014, joined a gym and took up playing golf. I played guitar from the age of 11 but gave it up when my hands became too numb to play. Since the surgery my hands have improved enough for me to take up the guitar again. All of the above would not have been possible without the skill and commitment of Mr Barrie White, his team and everyone at QMC Nottingham.

From the first referral for a benign spinal tumour I was given total confidence by Mr White. He was honest, thoughtful and gave me the choice, after giving me all the details, of going ahead with the op. The op was a complete success and the aftercare of his team was second to none. At 77 years of age he has freed me of long term pain and given me a new lease of life. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr White and all his team. Just continue all your good and hard work.
