My spinal problem manifested itself quite suddenly when I was a healthy, active 78 year old woman living alone and very much in control of my busy life. Following an MRI, it came as a shock to be told that my condition required major spinal surgery if I wished to avoid the possibility of needing a wheelchair. Luckily I was referred to Roy Chaudhary at The Manor, Oxford. It was very convenient to have an evening appointment as my son was able to drive me without needing to take leave. Mr Chaudhary was very approachable, kind and understanding, but pulled no punches regarding the prognosis; surgery; risks and probable outcome. He explained everything, pointing out the problem visible on my MRI and how he would repair the damage and reduce the risk of further deterioration. I had no hesitation in deciding to have the surgery asap and was admitted to the Manor within few weeks. I was in hospital for eight days where I received excellent care. Mr Chaudhary came to see me most days and it soon became clear to me that he and his team were extremely well-liked and respected by all the staff. I had no problems with the wound which has healed well. My post-op consultation (again in the evening) also went well and I am hoping to be back to my old self very soon.

Mr Chaudhary isvery personable and engaging, totally focused on my clinical situation which I was able to discuss thoroughly and unhurriedly, then he discussed all the options in detail with all the possible outcomes and the relevant merits and demerits of the different procedures and having allowed me to make a thoroughly informed choice he listed me and discussed the likely time scale. He reviewed me at an interval and was most concerned that my operation had not occurred and he personally intervened over admission arrangements. I was admitted to the short stay unit at The NOC, and having had my operation was discharged the following day. I saw Mr Chaudhary several times pre and post operatively and was at all times kept fully abreast of events by him. The operation has gone as well as could be hoped for and my in patient stay was as stress-free and pleasant as circumstance allowed and much of this resulted from Mr Chaudhary's attentions and personal and professional style of management. The admission through the short stay unit and the skill of micro surgery, from a patients point of view, allows complex procedures to be performed with a minimal in-patient stay and very much easier patient recovery, with minimal discomfort, rapid rehabilitation and early discharge and much quicker recovery than formal open surgery and the consequent longer in-patient convalescence. The whole experience of what is a fairly daunting surgical procedure and recovery has been as straight forward and uncomplicated as possible and this is due to a very efficient short stay surgical unit and staff who were excellent in every respect and the assiduous skills of Mr Chaudhary and his personable and accessible style.

I swapped to dr. Chaudary initially because a) he had great experience and credentials in my research on treating my condition and b) his assistant was so responsive and helpful. She replied to me proactively with a plan for surgery (already thought through) with 24 hours. This was completely different to experiences I had elsewhere, through the course of managing a herniated disk for the previous 4 months. Dr chaudary fitted me in for a consultation and surgery in less than 10 days… I was so well looked after with everything explained clearly and simply. He is friendly and patient and clearly knows what he is doing. Day of surgery at the manor hospital was super easy, all arranged like clockwork with friendly nurses. Went home on the day all prepared with physio advice and right meds from the pharmacist Very grateful for all the care taken of me.
