Mr Aws Al-Hity is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon, cataract and vitreoretinal specialist based at St James University Hospital, Leeds, United Kingdom since 2019. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at The University of Leeds School of Medicine. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a busy tertiary referral centre serving a population of over 1 million people. As well as supervising junior and senior trainees including surgical retinal fellows, he completes over 300 vitreoretinal procedures annually (over 2000 to date). In addition, he is a high volume, complex cataract surgery performing over 1000 annually (over 3000 to date) with complication rates of less than 0.25%. He frequently receives referrals for complex cataracts from fellow ophthalmic consultant colleagues. He graduated from the University of Leeds School of Medicine in 2009. He completed 7 years of ophthalmic training at the world-renowned Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow followed by a one-year advanced medical training vitreoretinal fellowship (AMTF) in Glasgow. Mr Al-Hity has a keen interest in relief work abroad in relation to ophthalmology, the highlight of which, being part of the Fighting Blindness In Ethiopia (FBIE) in 2017 setting up a cataract camp in the Nekemte Eye Clinic, Ethiopia to perform over 300 complex cataracts. Mr Al-Hity has a keen interest in research and completed a Bachelor’s degree with honours (BSc Hons) in Neuroscience in relation to medicine at the University of Leeds. His main research interests include the incidence, current management and future treatments of acute large submacular haemorrhage. He oversaw and conducted the Scottish Ophthamological Surveillance Unit (SOSU) Study which was the first of its kind in the world to identify the incidence of acute large submacular haemorrhage. Mr Al-Hity is a fellow of the Royal college of ophthalmologists and a member of the British and Eire Vitreoretinal Society (BEAVRS). He also serves on the UK Royal college of ophthalmologists examinations team assisting in the assessment and examination of senior ophthalmology trainees. He also sits as the lead for training in simulated eye surgery for Leeds which helps trainees master surgery on the eye surgery simulator. He has given numerous international presentations and published in highly regarded peer review journals. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds and is involved in undergraduate medical school curriculum and teaching. In his spare-time he enjoys Hiking in the Yorkshire dales and the Lake district, travelling and reading. He is a keen sportsman, playing tennis, badminton and resistance training. Mr Al-Hity is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the British and Eire Vitreoretinal Society (BEAVRS)
