Mr Atul Bansal

Mr Atul Bansal is a highly qualified and experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. He has a special interest in modern cataract and glaucoma surgery and also deals with a range of general ophthalmology conditions. He graduated from a top medical school with a first prize and has been in the field of ophthalmology for 28 years. He has trained extensively including specialist training from the Oxford region and higher specialist training from Birmingham. He further obtained advanced training in glaucoma from Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and an advanced fellowship with extensive experience in modern surgical and laser techniques from Manchester Eye Hospital. He was awarded the Birmingham Eye Foundation Roper-Hall Prize Medal in 2004 and received a distinction in the International Council of Ophthalmology assessment. Mr Bansal has special expertise in cataract surgery both for routine and complex cataracts and provides a specialised service with micro-incision, no sutures and an option of no-injection anaesthesia. He also offers the option of premium lenses including Toric and Multifocal lenses to reduce dependence on glasses at the time of cataract surgery. He specialises in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and offers advanced laser and surgical techniques for glaucoma. He is also available for consultation for a range of general ophthalmic conditions. He is an author of more than 20 indexed peer-reviewed publications, an MD thesis and chapters in a book on difficult cataract surgery. He has regularly presented at international and national meetings. He has chaired sessions on cataract and glaucoma surgery and has been an invited faculty and speaker. He has active research interest and is a principal investigator for the multicentre randomized multicentre trial for TAGS (Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study), is a co-investigator in many research trials and has been a principal investigator for the international study, EAGLE (Effectiveness of early lens extraction in angle-closure glaucoma). He is regularly providing teaching and surgical training for the registrars and has been nominated three times for the best regional trainer award. He has been the lead for Cataract service, the regional Quality lead for the School of Ophthalmology, Health Education West Midlands, departmental lead for postgraduate ophthalmology education and lead for QIPS (quality, innovation, productivity and safety) and clinical audit. Mr Bansal is driven by delivering patient-centred individualised service in a caring way and always aims for providing the best management with high standards of safety. He is a passionate photographer and has won several awards. He enjoys listening to music and spending time with his wife and two children.
