Mr Unnithan told me that 50% of a successful outcome after knee replacement surgery would be down to me. I concentrated on strengthening the leg before the operation with cycling and gym exercises. After surgery, I worked hard every day with physio and at 2 weeks started to rock the peddles on a gym bike. Gradually increasing the range of movement and the strength of weights and gym bands. At 3 months I was able to walk over rough ground for at least 30 minutes. At 6 months I do not notice any problems or pain in the knee and enjoy yoga and Thai chi classes with greater strength than before surgery. I also used an ice cuff to reduce pain and swelling from the first few days, it was a great help.

I wished for 'great care' and that's exactly what, I'm very pleased to say, I received from Mr Unnithan and his team. As a trauma patient I did not have the advantage of preparing for my Total Hip Replacement but Mr Unnithan with empathy and compassion clearly explained my treatment options. Although I was in a great deal of pain I recall the caring and professional way he answered questions regarding my situation and his prognosis which significantly enhanced my confidence in him. I also appreciated the relaxed way he entered into some banter with me which eased my discomfort and concerns. I'm 70 and was determined to make every effort to recover quickly by keeping ahead of the 'recovery curve' and six weeks to the day of my operation Mr Unnithan was pleased to 'sign me off', his exceptional care was paramount. I still have fair way to go to achieve a full recovery and it was helpful of Mr Unnithan to offer me an open appointment to contact him within six months should I feel the need to do so. If you are reading this as part of research into a Total Hip Replacement I can only say that in the unfortunate event I need another Replacement I sincerely hope Mr Unnithan is available to do it. Finally, I would urge you to diligently undertake the recovery exercises which are also key to a successful outcome.

Mr Unnithan did a great job on my knee replacement, he explained everything in detail and was very honest. I knew exactly what I was going to be dealing with and there was no shock about the experience. My knee has healed very well and the scar is very faint already even after just a few months. I have been signed off now but know that I am still recovering and have a little way to go yet but Mr Unnithan has said if I need anything or am worried to just give him a call. I was in constant pain with my knee before the operation and I am so pleased that I had it done. Everyone at The Runnymede did a grand job.

I was seen as a self pay patient by Mr. Unnithan for a total knee replacement when other Consultants had declined due to my Parkinson’s. He reassured me that he could do the operation and filled me with confidence. The resultant operation has been very successful with the previous level of pain almost gone and my mobility has improved considerably. Throughout he has shown a “wonderful bedside manner “ and has tried to look after us financially as self payers to the best of his ability. Thank you Mr Unnithan.

I had knee replacement surgery in October. The pain was less than expected and recovery also far quicker. Based on comments from others in the ward, I seemed to be more mobile and in less pain quicker, so many thanks to Mr Unnithan. Still working on the knee but so far it’s feeling really good - I’m so glad I had the Operation. Thanks again
