On 6th September I had a HALO and RAR operation for the treatment of large bulky haemorrhoids that had troubled me for a number of years. Mr. Gupta carefully explained what would be involved and the possible side effects and also took great care to warn me that it could be extremely painful and uncomfortable for a couple of weeks afterwards. In the event the operation was a great success and whilst house bound and sore for ten days after this there has been no further recurrence of the original problem. Mr Gupta was always thorough and conscientious and always made you feel that you would receive excellent care with him.

Response from Mr Ashish Gupta

Thank you. Just for those who aren’t aware and to explain a bit further about different modalities for haemorrhoid surgery - HALO is a Doppler guided suture ligation of vessels supplying the haemorrhoids ( Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation Operation) and RAR is Recto Anal Repair. This technique is quite effective in treating prolapsing haemorrhoids which are internal and cause bleeding. There is no cut involved but I must emphasise that depending onthe size and bill of haemorrhoids a lot of sutures may need to be taken and this can cause significant pain postoperatively. Hence although some people advertise HALO operation to be pain free, I must say that for the most benefits to achieve RAR is often combined and hence the pain ….

Mr Gupta was very thorough, understanding and caring with his investigations, analysis, explanations and procedures that I needed. I always felt I could talk to him openly, and he followed up the procedures with meetings and telephone calls to check I was OK. I highly recommend him.

Because of a recurrence of severe diverticulitis, I underwent an emergency colectomy in October 2020. This was performed by Mr Gupta, who came to see me before the procedure and explained why I needed it and what was involved, including the fact that I would have to have a stoma. He was very reassuring and I felt I was in safe hands at a very anxious time. Since then I have had regular follow up outpatient appointments with him. I have had a few post op issues and he has always taken the time to listen to my concerns and treat them seriously, and has promptly arranged for procedures/treatment to deal with them. I have chosen not to have a reversal operation for the stoma but, if I had, I would have no hesitation in having it performed by Mr Gupta. He has been unfailingly professional, approachable and kind.
