I am writing this on behalf of my 79 year old Mother who had a mesh implant operation carried out by Mr Sharma in February 2018 . The operation has been a great success as before my mothers quality of life very poor - she experienced great pain, bleeding and infections from a prolapse and is now has no restrictions to her lifestyle. However, the aftercare was non existent, She was sent home the next day, with no instructions on what she should or should not do She had stitches and glue across her stomach and we were not sure if she could bath or shower. We were given a generic booklet about what to do after the operation which was vague and not much help. I walked onto the ward, was told "She can go home" was not offered a wheel chair or any advice or assistance or even questioned as to who I was or how we were getting home. There seemed to be a basic lack of interest or care . Mum had been told she would get an review appointment in 6 weeks. at 4 weeks, after numerous phone calls to wards , departments and secretary's , I finally got through to Mr Sharma's secretary - who said we should have been given an appointment before we left the ward after the op. My Mum finally was seen 12 weeks after the operation. Mr Sharma said that he would refer her to physio as this was essential to maintain all the good results from the operation. That was 4 weeks ago and we have still not heard a thing. My sister has just spoken to Mr Sharma's secretary who informed us that there was a waiting list for the physio, no indication of how long or where we are on the list? The operation was a great success My Mum is back to how she used to be 10 years ago and I am truly grateful that we were referred to Mr Sharma and his surgical team. It is just unfortunate that the aftercare and communication by the hospital staff has been so poor. My Mother would recommend the mesh implant, as it has really enabled her to lead a normal and pain free life again.

Response from Mr Abhiram Sharma

I am mortified that we have not been able to provide your mother with the best possible aftercare. There are certain things like clinic follow-up and physiotherapy appointments that we are struggling with at Wythenshawe hospital. This is mainly to do with the huge demands on our service at the moment. This is however no excuse for the lack of communication to your mother. Can you please email my secretary on Julie.adger@mft.nhs.uk with your mothers details and I will escalate the issues to one of the surgery directorate managers. I will also feed it back to the ward staff and junior doctors so we can avoid this in the future.
