I had a serious bicycle fall injury to my wrist and elbow in February 2020, which required metal inserts in both joints. The surgery was carried out by Ms Tanaya Sarkell (wrist) and Mr Polyzois (elbow). Once the x-rays were reviewed, Mr Polyzois advised that this was a potentially 'life-changing' injury which may result in limited use of my arm in the future. The surgery was conducted at the Nuffield Hospital in Woking on 5th March, and took over 4 hours to complete. My arm was heavily swollen, stiff and painful, and the elbow had very limited range of flexion and extension, with a 'twist' range of about 1/4 of normal movement. Extension and flexion of the wrist was about 50%. I embarked on an extensive physiotherapy course with Paola Russell at Walton and Weybridge Physiotherapy, which lasted about 6 months in total. I am delighted with the result: I have full flexion and 90+% extension in the elbow, and about 80% pronation/supination (twist) in the arm, with full extension/flexion of the wrist. It's still a little stiff after 8 months, but I am able to use the arm fully, with no notable impact on my lifestyle (although I won't be riding a bike in the future!). I fully recommend all three specialists to anyone who needs the best orthopaedic treatment.
